Who is the Real Target?: Call for Armenian FM resignation illustrates need for legitimacy at the top and in the opposition

A week after the President of Nagorno Karabakh Bako Sahakyan called for pan-Armenian unity, the political party that hosted the conference from which Sahakyan made his plea is showing unfortunate familiar contempt toward fulfilling Sahakyan’s wish.

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation, the “Dashnaks”, on Thursday called for the resignation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Edward Nalbandian.

In reply to Karnig. You make good points and it is understood that sometimes cabinet members are dismissed to make statements that otherwise might not be so effectively stated. Please, however, explain how ArmeniaNow is being "defeatist" when we call (as did President Sahakyan) for unity (see the previous week's editorial) and political dialogue, as did former FM Oskanian's Civilitas Foundation (see the editorial of two weeks ago), rather than emotionally-driven reaction? Thanks for reading.

Mr. Nalbandyan needs to resign immediately and put a stop to his policy of appeasement and capitulation to turkey! How can you spit into the soul of a nation and its people by announcing this highly secretive "road map" with turkey just a day before the Genocide remembrance day and without consulting with the Armenian people?! How can you invite Genocide deniers to Armenia and then call them "a brave partner?" I am afraid that this is tantamount to treason! We already see that this policy has utterly failed and backfired. Did this man forget that we became diaspora because of Genocide and Armenia's continuous blockade by turkey and azerbaijan?! I am afraid that his administration is also for the "madrid principles" in regards to Artsakh and if it's implemented, this will lead to another war in Artsakh. They are out of control! I am fed up with these utterly irresponsible, and criminal regime already! We must take action now! Join me in writing a letter to Serj Sarkissyan and demanding for the firing of Mr. Nalbandyan and the reversal of the policy of capitulation to turkey! Every concerned Armenian should check this website: http://ararat-center.org/ for an accurate and in in-depth analysis of all major issues facing our nation and people.

Partisan politics aside, it is perfectly proper to call for the resignation of the Foreign Minister. President Sargsian himself is certainly not going to resign. In the U.S., cabinet members are fired or forced to resign all the time, while the president himself rarely resigns (the last one to do so was Nixon nearly 40 years ago.) As another example, a few years ago, Democrats were calling for the resignation of Attorney General Gonzalez. They did not call for President Bush to resign. As for your contention that "Nalbandian’s resignation is akin to Diaspora’s demand that any US Ambassador admit the Genocide", you are being just plain silly. First, American Armenians did not really demand that she admit the genocide. They simply grilled her and kicked her around. That is what we Americans do. We eat politicians and other officials for breakfast. Now, if it were the policy of the US to deny or dimish the Holocaust, and a US ambassador went along with that, you'd be outraged at all of them. You see the problem, don't you? You are not outraged about the denial of the Armenian genocide by the US *in the same way* you would be outraged at the denial or diminishment of the Holocaust. You see the double standard? This probably comes from some sort of inferior complex -and the subtly absorbed belief that Jews are more important than Armenians. I don't know how this well-known sort of brainwashing made it all the way from the US to Armenia, but there you have it. By the way, John Evans acknowledged the Armenian genocide when he was ambassador to Armenia and paid the price. Thus, it would be perfectly OK if we DID demand that Yovanovitch do the same principled thing. Another thing about Yovanovitch. She claims she is Serbian Orthodox, yet in her Senate confirmation hearings she claimed that her family fled "the Holocaust." More double talk from Ms. Yovanovitch? In view of the above, it is clear that ArmeniaNow relishes taking potshots at the Diaspora. There has also long been something defeatist about ArmeniaNow, and I welcome the opportunity to say that publicly.

Aren't Dashnaks the bedfellows of Serj Sargsian? Why would they demand his resignation - they were instrumental in bringing him to power. It was just a feeble attempt to retain some legitimacy.

Dashnaks should not be scared of attacking and overthrowing Sarkisyan. The Karabagh peace is already lost no matter what. With Armenia having lost completely on all international fronts here are two scenarios possible: Scenario 1: If SS cuts a deal, it will be a rotten deal and then Dashnaks will be obliged to push to overthrow him. In which case it will lead to the next scenario: Scenario 2: After the annulations of a rotten deal OR in the absence of a deal, the Azeris will attack Karabagh. That is a 100% certainty. With their military buildup they can predictably win the war. Armenia won’t be able to resist because the country’s and nation’s moral and unity is extremely weak. With war heroes in prison, corrupt officers and generals all the rest of shit we know, it is difficult otherwise. So here is an advise to the Dashnaks: The only way to be sure to win is to bring the spirit of hope and combat back to the people. That people start believing in their future and their country again. The sooner SS comes down the better. I am not saying that LTP will be better … but as it is, wehave already lost.
