Magic of “Lucky” numbers?: Year’s “Gold” Day gives Armenia a rare taste of victory in soccer

After more than two years, Armenia have scored their first victory in a competitive soccer match. Incidentally (or not) the rare victory came on a rare day 09/09/09. (The repetition of numbers is viewed by some as lucky. In Armenia many couples were married Wednesday, an unusual weekday occurrence.)

Armenia’s striker Hovhannes Goharyan (in 23rd minute) and veteran defender Sargis Hovsepyan (in 51st minute) scored one goal a half in the Wednesday FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifier against Belgium in Yerevan to give noticeably improved Armenia their first victory since June 6, 2007 when they beat Poland still in the Euro-2008 qualification under Scottish coach Ian Porterfield

Bianca But getting on the team increases chances for going abroad. Being an internatinal player is appreciated by many foreign clubs and coaches

Most of players know their strength, if they are so foolish as to pay bribes to get into the national team. They will learn quickly that this would not bring too much changes in their carrier. Ability, speed, discipline, work are primordial for a good carrier. I don't accuse players nor the coach... If that is what they are able to do. The win against Belgium is also important because it shows that the team is willing to win.

Edgar: what are you talking about man?, seems yo udont know much about how football works. Since when to players pay money to play for their national team?, players of national teams get paid to play they dont pay to play. That is just a ridiculous comment. Yeah there is corruption in Armenian football but your point is not accurate. Look how poor the standards are that armenia by luck wins against belgium after 2 years without a win in any qualifying competion. Yes is good that they won, but it show that standards and expections are very low as far as Armenian Football is concerned. Just because the won this game doesnt mean anything, they should still make big changes, start from firing Ruben Hayrapetian, and go from there.

You have to pay alot to get on a team! Everything in Armenia is corrupt ! You will never have a team winning if you just put players who aren't qualified but have money !

These guys still look like they fell off of a garbage truck on its way to the dump. They need to work on their appearance. At least if they keep losing, they can look cool. After all, they are Armenia's representatives abroad.

Lucky indeed. But they'd better try and make it a norm rather than an exception.

At last. We can win: we need a good AREMIAN coach, discipline, winner mentality, team spirit and, of course, some luck.
