Reality Check: Sargsyan urges Baku to show “down-to-earth” approach in Karabakh talks

Armenian President Serzh Sarsgyan called on leadership in Baku to drop their “all for myself” approach and concentrate in earnest on the current stage of peace talks with Yerevan to find a solution to the longrunning dispute over Nagorno–Karabakh.

At the end of his two-day working visit to Nagorno-Karabakh on Thursday, Sargsyan gave an interview to the local public television in which he reiterated that the Armenian side is in search of “realistic solutions that will lead to real peace and will be durable.”

Even with all their faults, Armenian history will look favorably upon Sargsyan and Kocharyan. The currant administration in Yerevan, with Moscow's full backing, is playing a brilliant game of diplomacy. Armenia has not had it this good in centuries, Artsakh's territorial integrity has never looked so good. Will we as a people be able to take advantage of these geopolitical opportunities for our nation's benefit? I don't know. But I do know that we Armenians are, generally speaking, ignorant naive peasants at heart. Therefore I'm not surprised by our collective inability to grasp international realpolitik or our current leadership's capabilities.

1- RoA and Artsakhis /NKR should show the OSCE and international community the red line - this is a must. Better to demand the historic Armenia city of Ganja, instead agree to discuss a possible return of a part of security belt! 2- Artsakhis /NKR should refuse to work with corrupt NGO organisations/ think tanks like ICG ! 3- Artsakhis /NKR should not allow Islamic conference to become just a tool in the hand of Azerbaijani government! 4- Artsakhis /NKR should demand form RoA authorities to respect the human rights, stop cheting the nation and stop plundering Armenian state budget

Besides, Artsakhis are more nationalistic than Armenians. They are together and always help each other out. I love our brotherly Artsakh and I wish that one day they will have their own independent state.

I agree with Baronian and Dro. We are underest imating Serzh. He is a Karbakhsti and I can never see any Karabakhsti selling out Karabakh. Never. So its a deeper game than it seems at first. And as for the Dashnaks crying regime change, too late comrades! You shouldn't cozied up in the first place.

dro, I agree with you 100%...We need to be pragmatic and look at the entire VISTA and not just a picture or two. I now think Sarkissian will come through with flying colors...he ain't so stupid...

Serj is just preparing the corrupt leaders of karabagh for their future sale. When will this country throw out of office this retard of Serjik???? How can a guy be so crapy and still remain in power so long???????????????????????????? My guess is that he will only go after the economic situation starts deteriorating beyond common people's pain threshold. Right now the thiefs are all eating the loans made by the Int community. Once they have to start paying back things will start degenarting quickly and Serj will have to go... Before that, he will do anything to keep power, including selling Karabagh. That's what he is doing now: preparding the leadership of Karabagh for their future sales.

What concessions did Sargsyan made so far? He policies are realist policies, trying to enhance Armenia's security. When he makes a concession, than it would be to the point to make objections to it. But so far, I personally cannot see what concessions he made to either Turkey or Azerbaijan. The historical commission outcomes will not be legally binding. It is just a way for Turkey to prolong the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in order to find a way to explain to its public why the state has been lying for so many years. Also, Armenia has a very good policy on Azerbaijan. These negotiations do not say anything. Armenia just has to engage in negotiations to be able to defend its interests. If it would not negotiate, how could Yerevan make clear its stance? Eventually, whatever the outcomes of these negotiations, the people of Artsakh will decide their future. They have already expressed their free will to be independent. Everyone should respect that. Ilham Aliev is a rational person, but he also knows that his society is not healthy. He has to adapt to this situation, seeking to stay in power by playing the nationalistic tune but also being realistic and rational and not using force against either Armenia or NK. Because he knows that he will loose. For someone who fiercely is threatening to attack Armenia and NK for more than 10 years now, you would expect he done it a long time ago. Mister Aliev, what is it that holds you back? Why don't you attack? Why don't you keep your promises to your own people? Is it perhaps because of fear? Only the first round of the war is won? Well, we are tired of waiting for the second round. When is the second round mister Aliev? There is no second round. Azerbaijan lost the war. If it wants to try and win, it should announce another war against Armenia.

Sos, Respect your arguments. Check Sargsyan's speeches in New York (but on youtube, not print). You will be surprised to learn what he said.

Gor, Can you tell me when Sargsyan made that qoute? "concessions not to keep a 70,000 strong army" If Sargsyan did make this comment than it was taken out of context. Over the last 10 years Armenia's military policy has been to reduce regular army forces, while expanding combat readiness with Special and Rapid Reaction forces. A smaller but better fighting force with a larger reserve behind it. This is probably what he meant.

Isn't this the same Sarkisyan who declared during his diaspora tour that we need to make concessions not to keep a 70,000-strong army? Or isn't he the one who said that he hesitated whether to support Karabakh fight or not in the early 90s? Everyone should know - if you refuse to feed your army, you will be made to feed your enemy's army, and even if we make huge concessions, we will still have to maintian either our army or the army of Mr "bad commander" Aliyev.

When is finally RoA and NKR going to declare Sabine Freizer from ICG ( ICG is itself is source of problems and Crisis!) as Persona non Grada /NOT WANTED = SHUT UP what did ICG in 80´s 90´s as NKR was fighting Azerbaijnai aggreson back,in order to servive! ? http://news.am/en/news/azerbaijan/7112.html As if Armenia or NKR were negation with Sabine Freizer and ICG 1- she is accusing Armenia having "deconstructive stance" 2- Nothing is agreed till everything is agreed. Still, she announcing her pro Azerbaijani /Turkish wishes is : "could sign a document that at least puts into writing these significant issues the parties agreed upon,” Well , she is aware of the fact that now it is the turn of Baku to make real concessions above all regarding final status and referendum etc .. but she like to see “written down the agreed pro Azerbaijani achievements so far…playing wit the security of NKR! NKR should at least sent a protest letter to ICG and refuse any contact with ICG!There are many reason for this!

i think we need to be pragmatic and look at the protocols from a third point of view. It is surely a negative agreement on one side, but on the other side a border opening is not a mere economic stimuli, but it can also seriously put Armenia as a major player in the region, thus stripping Georgia of bragging rights. I dont think Sargsyan is going to give an inch of land. He is now playing the diplomatic game that turks played with the international comunnity after the Genocide of 1915. After all it is a game and without opening border and playing it we cant win.

First...I think we need to give Sarkisian more credit than we have so far. Second..a long AS Erdogan is PM of Turkey...things will only get worse...This man is ignorant and arrogant....Erdogan has no clue of what it takes to get it right...President Gul...Yes he does and he is sincere...The Foreign Minister Davitoglu needs to define and disclose his origins before he can be taken seriously...everybody knows OGLU is not a real Turkish origin name...! Mr. Obama...well he made a big boobooo...it's going to cost him the next election...the guy has no clue what he's doing...! promise one thing to get elected...do another thing after the election Anyway...the protocols mean nothing because Turkey will not ratify them...

Any guarantee supplied by AZR would not be worth the paper it was written on. AZR is not interested in a compromise with NKR / ARM. Basically, the longer the status remains, the less Aliyev and co need to explain their democratic failures to their population. In any negotiation, both parties must have an alignment of interests. Right now every one in the region has their interests aligned apart from AZR. What the turkic states hope is that Armenia will collapse and so their version of negotiation (take all) will come to fruition. This will not happen and TKR and AZR will have to negotiate. As an Armenian, I cannot help but have a subjective point of view but no reasonable person can see how a negotiation is possible in this case without complete capitulation.

Is Sarksyan going to sell Karabagh to Azeris as well?

Azarbayjan leadership is looking more and more out of touch with the reality on the ground. Europe, Russia, US and even Turkey realize that NKR will never be part of AZR again. AZRs cannot be trusted around Armenian civilians, they have savage entities within them that do not belong to the 21st century. No one would put Armenian population under a country that had incidents such as Sumgait and Baku massacres. Let alone an entity that publicly associates itself with blood painted pan-Turan and has an eye for Zangezur region. Maybe the world is waiting for AZR to make a mistake and attack NKR, after AZR humiliating defeat again the whole world will accept NKR as an independent republic. Probably it is in AZR interest to cut a deal now while they can...
