Pashinyan’s case: Time spent in hiding boomerangs opposition editor’s electoral chances

Nikol Pashinyan, the currently jailed editor of an opposition daily, was denied the proof of his five-year permanent residence in Armenia, without which the Central Electoral Commission is not entitled to register his candidacy in a parliamentary by-election.

The ground for not confirming the constitutionally required residence qualification was the letter sent by the Head Department of the Armenian Police’s Criminal Investigation Department on November 3, which states that from February 26, 2008 to July 7, 2009 Pashinyan was wanted by authorities and he did not live in Armenia during that period.

Yes, one wonders where these "clever" police officers were 11 years ago when RK came to power... But then again, it is hardly news that the authorities use this tactic. They did something similiar to Raffi H to stop his candidacy in 2003.

A ridiculous decision of Armenian police as actually almost every decision of regime's law enforcement agencies. If they didn't know about Nikol's whereabouts, how they want to determine, whether he was in Armenia or outside. What about term "residence" - in the legal sense it means having officially the first residence (and being registered) in Armenia and not staying without break in the country. This way they can refuse that certificate to everyone, who made in last five years some long holidays or was on study or business trips abroad. And does that interpretation also mean that no Armenian diplomat can leave his service and enter into politics, just because he might have been serving for some years in other countries? Indeed, MT, if only our police were so scrupulous some 11 years ago, we wouldn't have RK's untalented rule, his successor and today's situation...

Petros. Do you have any evidence that Petros is a "Sharqayin Hantsagorts". Sharqayin hantsagorts is Robert Kocharyan, who did not have Armenian residence and citizenship but occupied our country and killed people on March 1.

Nikol's case is right. Nikol will take the victory over low forces.

There seem to be 4 versions of Nikol Pashinian: Nikol A: He was in Armenia until February 26 when he became a wanted person and fled the country; Nikol B: Was in the Liberty Square from February 26 til March 1; Nikol C: Voluntarily surrendered to the police on June 1, 2009. He is now locked up at the KGB and has been put on "trial"; Nikol D: Arrived in Armenia on June 7 and is enjoying his freedom on the streets of Armenia. According to the police, the whereabouts of this Nikol are known but he has not been arrested. he is either not Nikol A, or they do not want to put him on trial because Nikol C is already on trial. Նիկոլը շարքային հանցագործ է։ Իրա տեղը բանտում է և ոչ թե ազգային ժողովում։
