Baghdad in Ararat: Iraqi-Armenian refugees face difficulties adapting to the “homeland”

The village of Darbnik, Ararat province, has become home to 26 families who escaped war in Iraq in recent years. The United Nations mission in Armenia has renovated the building of Darbnik’s former agricultural college, and prepared 46 apartments for the refugees.

Firstly, if Iraqi Armenians want to leave Armenia as soon as possible then they have to do so. No one is holding their hands. Secondly, if they are not and most importantly do not want to become Armenian citizen I do not see a reason why Armenian government should go out of its way to provide a comfortable life to those people. Why is it difficult to understand that Armenia is still struggling and has many families that lost their homes in 1988 and still do not have proper homes? You are complaining that you cannot find a good job because you do not have connections but this is the very same problem that any ordinary Armenian has. Please stop your negativity and it is very offensive to hear that you are ready to leave as soon as you can. And I do not think that it will be good for Armenia to invest in people who are just looking for the first opportunity to leave Armenia. Sorry for being harsh but that is what I honestly think and no I am not from the Armenian government. I would understand if you complain about job opportunities, poverty and so on but not in that manner.

Hello dear ArmeniaNow. I would like to apologize for what I am going to write, just got very angry when reading the article. First of all let me tell you that my husband is also from Iraq. We are married but have no place to live as we were waiting our turn to get a flat ,if we knew it would take months we would rent a flat(a cheap one)to live in till we get the flat, though till now have no hope to get one. Gohar Galstyan's words made me angry. She said “They also have some problems connected with the language, because they do not speak the (Armenian) language well enough to get a normal job. Besides, only few of them have a higher education, most of them (Iraqi-Armenians) are jewelers and auto mechanics,” To begin with my husband speaks Armenian as I do and as Gohar Galstyan does. He did not get higher education as on coming to Armenia they had to work and earn their living, being only 15.As for me I have higher education and speak fluent Armenian, still have no permanent job. What I want to say is that the reason Iraqi-Armenians has no job is not the fact that they do not speak Armenian well enough or that they have no higher education. The reason may be that they do not have the relatives required in Armenia to have a GOOD job. She also said that majority of Iraqi-Armenians are not interested in getting an Armenian citizenship. “First, in case of getting an Armenian citizenship, they will not enjoy any privileges (those which they have being refugees) any more." I really got astonished reading this sentence and couldn't believe my eyes. I reread it several times and wished she could name at least on privilege they have being a refugee. "Besides, many of them have not made a final decision whether to stay in Armenia or leave for another country,” Galstyan says. I do assure you many of them have made a final decision and she knows that better than anyone else. They will leave Armenia as soon as possible if they have a chance. They are given Travel Documents that are not even accepted in Armenian banks; do not even speaking about travel agencies.
