New Opera?: Attempted rally at renovated Freedom Square stopped by police

Six representatives of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), who had attempted to hold a sit-in protest in the re-opened Freedom Square (near Opera House) since Friday, on May 30 were taken into police custody and told to make their statement anywhere in Yerevan “except Freedom Square”.

The Square has been closed for two years while an underground parking garage was built. Oppositionists have claimed the closure of the site was to prevent more political rallies. The opposition had used the square as an encampment days before the deadly raid by police on March 1, 2008 that left 10 dead, hundreds injured and dozens arrested.

What ever happened to democracy in Armenia? Are we going to become like Aliyev's Azerbaijan, all stick?

Listen anonymous, I do not support any political party either, and I agree with you but also want to add that in any case we had never had and will never ever have independant and democratic country. In our country there is no OPPOSITION (it is a fake concept in here, opposition and current rulers quite frequently change places, make shows for us and take their part of the BIG CARROT, take say Artur Baghdasaryan, a classical DURU soap)

As long as there are people like our friend Vartan here we will never have a free and democratic Armenia. We all know how corrupt the police and the authorities in Armenia are, these people have never been and never will be legally elected by the Armenian people. They are theifs and gangsters. I lived in Armenia until 2000 and I can assure you that not a single "police" officer was or ever will uphold the law, there is a reason why there is such a stigma against the police in Armenian communities. Freedom square is for the people of Armenia and if the people of Armenia want to protest they deserve the right. Supporting any authority figure in Armenia is equal to supporting the illegal mafioso government. By the way I do not support Levon or any current political party in Armenia.

I can not believe how these people dare to talk to the police... if it was in Europe, the police would beat you so hard that you would not try it again! In Europe, is a protest is not authorized, they sent a special ''demonstration'' police squad, with dogs and armed policeman who kick/beat you and sent the dogs who bite you in your flesh... Stupid traitors, Levon-Ter-Petrosian was the biggest traitor for Armenians and he does not stop till today, leave Freedom Square it is not yours! With their fake crying..

Of course before starting deporting those protesters of Freedom Square to Siberia, a bill should be introduced by the Armenian Parliament legalizing various kinds of penalties for those protesting in the Freedom Square, and this bill clearly would ban such protests in mentioned square. With such a bill the police would have authority to act and not to beg. Yerevan is a big place; let those protesters find someplace else for disturbing the peace and let them leave us along for enjoying culture and recreation at the square by the Opera House at our leisure.

I agree with the authorities in Yerevan, Freedom Square At the Opera should be used for cultural and recreational purposes only and not for agitations and protests against the legal authorities and the people of Armenia. Those so called ANC people have already done big damage to Armenia, locally and internationally. Moreover they have divided Armenians and thus weakened us in great measure. This ANC group people are traitors to Armenia. THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERYTHING. When there is outside threat against Armenia, Freedom Square can be used by all Armenians to counter this enemy threat, but otherwise Freedom Square must not be used by one group of Armenians fighting against another group of Armenian; or worst still, a group of Armenians using that Square for fighting against the legal Armenian authorities. Therefore, as an Armenian, I ask the authorities to deport anyone violating these criteria to be deported to Siberia maybe there they learn something.
