Knesset to hold session on Armenian genocide

Despite the diplomatic tensions between Israel and Turkey aroused by last month’s botched raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla, the Knesset is scheduled to hold a session later this month on the Armenian genocide of 1915, which is attributed to the Ottoman Turks.

But due to an agreement between the government and the Knesset, the discussion will be held not in the plenum, but in a Knesset committee - most likely the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

"Holocaust was unique" the reason why Oron says this and many other Jews do, is because The Holocaust has become a big political tool for the Israeli government. It is a strategic propaganda tool to push forward Israeli agenda, dragging in the 6 million Jews that were killed. Saadam was Hitler, Ahmadinajad is Hitler, Hamas is Hitler any enemy of Israeli can be labeled like this.

thank you Ben-Sorek, we know there are MANY good Jewish people who feel likewise. the problem is that Israel as a nation feels the opposite. we understand the dire political situation Israel is in, but we also know very well how the Jews felt in the 1930's-1940's and how many didn't help them for the same reason. It will not be the end of the world if Israel helps Turkey deal with its history, but with the current Islamic Party in office, it's probably too late for that now. As it is, the hypocrisy of the holocaust versus genocide makes Armenians much more anti-semetic...and it doesn't help that so many Armenians were exiled to Lebanon, Syria, and Iran.

As an Israeli Jewish citizen, I deplore the silence of my government relating to the terrible genocide and massacre of 1 1/2 million Armenians at the hands of the murderous Ottoman Turks. The silence is based upon realpolitik. Until very recently, Turkey had been Israel's strongest Moslem ally and in order not to rock the boat, Israel did not use the word genocide. Nazi Germany was responsible for a Holocaust that took the lives of six million Jews. Yet after the defeat of the Nazis, the new Germany admitted past crimes, apologized, and made restitution to the victims. We Jews cannot blame today's Germans for the genocide of yesterday's Germans. Likewise, modern Turkey is not responsible for the massacres committed by a previous Ottoman regime. But, unlike Germany which repented openly, modern Turkey has failed to admit the crimes of the past, has failed to apologize to the Armenian people, and equally has failed in making restitution. Today's Turkey must be held accountable for past crimes against Armenians, the first nation to accept Christianity. My heart has ached for years for the wonderful people of Armenia. I knew many of them in Jerusalem near St. James Monastery. They work industriously in ceramics, pottery, jewelry and in photography. They are a great people deserving of honor. And we, the world, must condemn Turkey's silence and recognize the Ottoman crimes as the world's first genocide.Modern Turkey must be held accountable for its past history and the nations of the world should demand a Turkish apology. Please share the thoughts of this one Jewish man to the Armenian community. God bless Armenia.
