Failed talks?: Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting not on the cards in Bucharest

A top-level meeting of Armenian and Azeri leaders is very unlikely to take place on the sidelines of the NATO summit due to start in Romania later this week, it transpired over the weekend.

Before that, it was expected that Armenia’s newly elected President and current Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan would meet Azerbaijan’s head of state Ilham Aliyev anytime between 2-4 April in Bucharest.

The initiative of the meeting in Bucharest came from the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), an international format brokering a Karabakh peace.

The Diaspora - Armenians can indeed mean a lot for Armenia. Imagine when high educated Armenians move to Armenia, how advantageous that can be for the country. I would love to work and live in my country in future. I don't mind the circumstances that much as much as I do mind the mentality of the people. The intolerance of Armenians towards others and the incapability of many to accept different people with different views than the so-called 'Armenian' view (living your life for neighbours, acquintances, etc. instead of for yourselve), doesn't make it easy for us to comform in Armenia.

TO Henry, I agree with some of your comments, however, being on CNN or any other news does not mean that you're important. About the Armenian goverment not being able to form a link with Diaspora, at least the Kocharian goverment tried, Levon put them in jail and only took their money. Hopefully Serge wil try to do better. Without Diaspora, Armenia has no chance and this is why the people in Armenia should fight for, if the Diaspora is fully involved in Armenia then the rest of the world will follow. Imagine if Armenia fails with the Diaspora then why sould anyone else be inticed to do anything for Armenia.

Answer to Armenian: Here is what I think is wrong with the foreign policy of Armenia: After all this time of independence, the authorites have not managed to 'put Armenia on the World map'. Armenia, is absent from all news media. Just go on CNN or any other int. news web site and type "Armenia", you will be surprised. No News!!! except maybe the latest on the 'post-election unrests'. Armenia is diplomaticaly absent. It has no natural resources and is not (has not been made) strategic to anyone. With the exception of Russia. Many still consider Armenia as a part of or region of Russia!!! Lets not fool oursleves, a few months of ads on Euronews and CNN saying 'come to Armenia' does not correspond to any strategic action to brand Armenia on the international scene. The ONLY international asset Armenia has is its Diaspora. Even there, the authorities have COMPLETELY failed to create a link. The reason is that they have been too protective of their corrupt power, slowly suffocating Armenian economy and politics to death. Lets not lie to ourselves, Diaspora has been, over the years, distanced from Armenia! When an authority fails so miserably and does such a bad job they should be sanctioned by a vote of 'no trust' and be fired. That's what happened on the May 1st.

To - -----, Somthing wrong with you. Those people were fired and did not resign. Armenian foriegn policy is the most right thing about Armenia and the Foreign Ministry is the only Ministery that function normal. There is no room for incompetent people if they want leave is because they seek a corrupt system where the can do illegal things and get away with doing so.

Most resignations happened within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. 5 high rank diplomats (including vice-minister and ambassadors) resigned and voiced support for Levon. I do not think that it was because of Vardan Oskanian's policy or smth subjective. It means that there is something wrong with the foreign policy of this country.

what can sargsyan-kocharyan regime offer? they don't have perpsective or strategy regarding karabagh conflict, they launched a 10 year old aimless negotiations process that led us to where we are now, near dipl;matic defeat and isolation, this regime is a total failure, and with its worng policies will jeopardzie not only Karabagh but also Armenia...not only Aliyev, even Putin and Bush don't respect these little dictators called sargsyan-kocharyan

People wake up! We have the threat of Azerbaijan.. we are surrounded with over 80 million Turks.. and here we are arguing with each other, hating on each other, thanks to what Levon and his crew did to us. Levon didn't protest for "Freedom".. he protested for separation between the small population we do have. Something no patriotic Armenian would ever do. Both Dashnaks and Orinats Yerkir Party.. two other political parties in Armenia agreed to cooperate with with government and work together announcing: "we need to unite our people in times like this.. we have too many enemies and can't afford this separation". That was the patriotic thing to do! And lets not forget how Levon shut the door on the face of Catholicos Karekin II when he personally went to Levon's residency begging him to give a speech to calm the violence and vandalism and united the people again. That's the respect he has for amenayn hayots katoghigos. Shame!

When it comes to solving the Karabakh conflict, I think Sargsyan is the right one to do so.

To Henry, Indeed, classic resoning and a "Classic" excuse. There is no reason or "Excuse" for what Ter Petrosyan and gang did. That's not hunger for "Freedom" it's pure criminal! It's about time that Armenians learn to be responsible for their actions and stop giving excuses of this and that. It may take generation or two and I hope it happens sooner than later. By the way out of all the Armenian presedential condidates, Serge seems by far the best option we have right now.

May I ask Armenianow web master/designer a small favour: When I open the page it is shocking to see Aliev's pictue that big. Please do not misunderstand me this is not a political remark. It is an aesthetic one. The guy is (objectively) just so ugly it spoils the view of the page. Could you please make Aliev's picture smaller? Thanks

Reply to Vachagan, Dear Vachagan, The line of reasoning you propose is a classical one. I have one question then: I guess, as an Armenian, you wouldn't mind being rulled by a strongman dictator? To stay consistent with your theory you need to answer 'yes'. In that case, I invite you to do so. The reason the people of Armenia seem ungovernable is some 80 years of Soviet regime which has turned them hungry for individual self-expression and wild freedom. Otherwise, they are people like any other people on this planet. As to they corruptness: the fish always rots from the head. I the top stops rotting in no time you will see the people stop corruption.

To Henry, Who is to rule a people that are corrupt and criminal but a better and stronger corrupt person? Can decent and honest person (for example Vartan Oskanian) rule over the people of Armenia??? I think not. Armenia needs a strong Republican Dictatorship to survive,, it's people are not "governable" they need to be ruled by a strongman. The real but sad truth.

It's in Azerbaijan's interest to want to negotiate. Armenia has no interest whatsoever. We have solved the Karabagh issue. No one is going to give them back any piece of land.

I agree completely with Henry. The political reputation of Armenia on the international level was completely fallen by Robert and Sergh. They forgot that now is not time when people like Stalin could be popular not only in SU but also abroad. Obviously their current political advisors and economists are not smart at all. It is 21st century. After Stalin, Hitler, etc. and tragic history of world wars people over the world have more knowledge and right attitude to such events. I wish Armenia have smarter leaders then now! And more civilized president, deputies and ministers! Our people deserve it!

Years and years of corruption, State criminality and gang rule have weakened Armenia. Levon, Robert and Serj all had their share in it and are responsible for it. It is not just two weeks of steet disorder which has emboldended Azeris. What has emboldened them is the fact that after a decade of criminal activity by Robert and Serj the country is economicaly and demographicaly on its knees. And now it has fallen politically. Armenia has lost all credit in field of business and politics and in becoming a no-where. How come we have no one else that criminals to lead this country? It is sadening to see that no one in Armenia trust any of these guys. They all know that the regime is so corrupt that no matter which of the guys is President it is going to stay that way.
