Time for ‘Civilized’ Debate: Ruling Party’s rep. says ‘rally season’ over in Armenia

A senior governing party member has countered the assertions that authorities in Armenia are worried over the opposition rally planned for August 1, noting that “the rally season in Armenia is over.”

At the same time, Eduard Sharmazanov, a senior lawmaker and spokesman for the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), said any clash or provocation would run against the public interest.

“Today, it is necessary to wage a political struggle by means of civilized, normal political debates. But of course, every political force should decide for itself what tactics it wants to adopt,” Sharmazanov told reporters on Monday.

if we want to forget everything and forgive the leaders for their wrong doings...at least, we should not keep quiet about March 1, that shameful act of attacking on sleeping people, and beating passers-by and later shooting people and killing them in teh darkness of the night...that is the biggest crime..the one who ordered that crime is clearly Robert Kocharyan...i am telling you...that alone is enough to persecute this people-hater Caucescu... and please...don't open your mouths and tell me that LTP did crimes...give me one example...

-- According to Sharmazanov, however, only trials will show whether there are political prisoners in the country or not. -- Mr. Sharmazanov seems to be smoking some potent stuff. Or he is lieing.

Avo, in some point s i agree with you but one can not offer halfhearted” Serjic an helping hand demand to implement this and that and at the same time , with an ax in the hand, try to “cut/ax” his head. The first think which authorises should do is : PLEASE start to steal lees and spend more to rebuild the country! For me Serjic, Levon , Robert , Shanazaryan &co are all from the same calibre, format Only, I do believe Serjic has the power to stop “oligarchies”and corruption .. if he wants!

Even a president should be afraid of judicial system in a true democracy there is no quation about this! but the hate campaign of a part of so called opposition/LTP and the nonsense regarding “Kocharyan and Hague.” are more the signs/ forerunner of a mob law / lynchings .. But what we wane is rule of law ... Hague: A mass which is fed by a hate campaign after a certain point is able to act independently- the actors know what they do! Authorities better ignore hate campains , free all jailed people and implement true reforms this includes allwoing A1+ ..

lets not forget that people are of animal decent and they will do everything to get their way. Such as the ones who are spreading absurdity about Kocharyan and Hague. These are people who place their needs ahead of the needs of the nation. There is no legal basis. Instead of letting foreigners solve our problems we need to take care of ourselves.

It seems everyone who is pro-government keeps remembering the past. You always have to bring up Vano. I got news for you. twenty years has passed. There is no Vano and no Vazgen Sarkissian. These people were the pioneers of Armenian Independence who were not chosen by politics or the people. They were just dudes with balls who got up and took action in the late 80ies. Today is not the case, we have political parties, experience, monitoring of european organizations and western organizations. Stop talking about the past. In the past, people like Levon, Vazgen, Vano, Robert, Serzh were all hungry people trying to find their place in wealth, power, and politics. Now those days are all gone, everyone was the wealth, their part of power and politics in Armenia. There is no need for what happened in Armenia in the early 90ies. Levon's goals and principles are not what they were 20 years ago and certainly Robert's and Serzh's goals and principles are not either. TODAY, (not yesterday, or 20 years ago) I respect anyone who is taking civilized ways of taking our people to an independent, fair, and democratic country. To me, Today, Levon is showing the most will out of all the major politicians that were running for presidency. If Serzh decides to take the initiative and exceed Levon's demands and diplomacy, I will support him and forgive his past.

It seems like "each" of us is pure and everyone else should be jailed. Should we try an Armenian National Reconciliation? Some nations (South Africa and Ireland for instance) have tried it successfully.

Slivia, I am paying taxes in Armenian therefore i get involved in such discussions You are right. I agree with you regarding “by means of civilized, normal political debates." but if you, and “Levons people” can accept "vano” as an “hero” and other oligarchies and people with dirty past around Levon as “opposition leaders or future ministers etc” why do complain about people like Dodi Gago,Lifik Samo,Nemec Rubo and refuse a dialog with them or try at least to find ways of dialog!? “opposition” is not really , honest earnest and consequence when it comes restoring laq and order, and fighting “Mafioso and criminal gangs”

The rally won't be over for as long as authorities show fear of it. As soon as they lift all restrictions the rallies will die down. All they need to do is to let the steam out, as long as they keep the lid tight the pressure builds up. Only forbidden fruit is desired but when it's allowed they will get bored. As far as taking Robert Kocharian to Hague, there are no legal basis and it is only a humiliation to our country, damage to the country's reputation. This only plays in the hands of our enemies.

Who is going to clean p Armenia of the criminal gangs? Levon Ter Petrosian himself runs a gang of charlatans who brought darkness, poverty, hunger and misery to the Armenian people during his presidency. The way to clean up any country from its shortcomings is through civilized political struggles and grassroot activities. LTP doesn't promote natural evolution of the political maturity of Armenia. I don't want him to shut up but I want him to change his strategy.

Artur, Your comments are characteristic of forces called "fifth column " If you are “Armenian” Please, do not forget to take the mentor of Robert, The EX-president Levon and his gangsters., to The Hague with! Armenians are tired of both! People should listen a bit less to “radio Azatutyun “ This is one of reasons why Armenian needs independent and PRO Armenian Media and not tomorrow but still today!

The bottom line is that unless we clean up Armenia of the criminal gang of Serj and Robert Armenia is bond to go from bad to worse. Serj does not seem to understand that there are forces which will not give up until Armenia is clean. And yes, Robert Kotcharyan will be taken to The Hague and judged for his crimes. There is all the reason in the World for Aug 1st. And other rallies and struggle until Armenia is free of gangsters.
