Active Phase: President Sargsyan lays out vision for Nagorno-Karabakh settlement

President Serzh Sargsyan spoke of an active phase in the resolution of the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh as he visited the self-declared Armenian republic last weekend to attend a large-scale military drill.

“The real situation is that after a prolonged passive phase the process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution has entered the active phase,” Sargsyan said in an interview with Public Television. “This is stipulated by at least two important factors: The presidential elections in both Armenia and Azerbaijan have been completed. And the second factor: after the well-known events (war in Georgia) that took place in the region, it became clear that there is no military solution to the problem.”

Mkrtich Tononyan, Are you unhappy about falsifying election or Serzh being an Armenian from Karabakh? By changing his last name with Turkish/Azeri ending and mentioning Karabakh you try to imply that Karabakh is not Armenian and he is not Armenian. You are still inhibited by anti-Armenian hatred created by Levon and company. With this views people like you will not only sell out Karabakh, but leave Yerevan to Turks as well. So who is the turk?

Vahe, and whomever else it may concern. Here is a link to the Nov. 2007 Madrid Principles to the Karabakh Conflict Settlement http://unzipped.blogspot.com/2008/10/disclosed-madrid-principles-of-karabakh.html OSCE Minsk Group Karabakh Conflict Report - Madrid RECOMMENDATIONS To the Governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan: 1. Agree before the 2008 elections on a document of basic principles making provision for: (a) security guarantees and the deployment of international peacekeepers; (b) withdrawal of Armenian and Nagorno-Karabakh forces from all occupied territories adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh, with special modalities for Kelbajar and Lachin; (c) return of displaced persons; (d) Nagorno-Karabakh’s final status to be determined eventually by a vote, with an interim status to be settled on until that time; and (e) reopening of all transport and trade routes. More... (source: The Karabakh Deal) Below is the extract from Armenia’s opposition leader, former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan speech during the latest rally listing the basic principles of the proposed Karabakh settlement. “Thus, it is perfectly obvious that we are standing on the brink of a resolution to the Karabagh conflict. It is also beyond doubt that the Madrid proposal, which the Minsk Group gave to the parties in December, 2007, and which is based on the idea of reconciling two principles of international law – the right to national self-determination and the principle of inviolability of territorial integrity – will be the basis of the new proposal. As for the essence of the resolution or the specific program, it will consist of approximately the following points: 1. Withdrawal of Armenian forces from the Azerbaijani regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabagh; 2. Resettlement of these regions with Azerbaijani refugees; 3. Return of Azerbaijani refugees to the territory of Nagorno-Karabagh itself; 4. Provision of an overland link connecting Nagorno-Karabagh to Armenia through the Lachin corridor; 5. Deployment of peace-keeping forces on across the borders of Nagorno-Karabagh; 6. Demilitarization of the territories that have been returned to Azerbaijan; 7. Lifting of the blockade of Armenia’s and Karabagh’s external communications, and reopening of the Armenian-Turkish border; 8. Definition of an interim status for Nagorno-Karabagh Republic; 9. Conduct of a referendum on the final status of Nagorno-Karabagh in some undefined, future date; 10. Provision of international financial aid for the restoration of the conflict zone.”

The so-called President of Armenian "Arshipelag Gulag", His Majesty Serzh-Sarkis-Olgu ibn Karabakh-Bashi is free to discuss and solve any problems, but not on behalf of Armenian people. I do agree that falsifying elections is immoral and our moral response is that we will never recognize any decision imposed on us by Mr. S.S., Ilham-oglu-Haydar-Aliyev or someone else.

I am really interested to know what this 'Madrid Document' is. What are considered as 'priciples' in that document and what were the agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Non of the governments (neither ours, nor Azerbaijani government) don't speak about it clearly. I think it will be very useful if journalists (like ArmeniaNow) try to find out its differenr aspects and let the public know about it.

"We are resolving an important historical issue, and in the process of its resolution if someone is trying to find some other interest, it is simply immoral,” said Sargsyan in an apparent reference to the recent accusations aired by opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan that he [Sargsyan] was ready to make concessions over Nagorno-Karabakh only to legitimize his presidency in the West’s eyes." It seems like he is admitting he is illegitimate and he thinks cheating the elections is moral, yet an opinion or a theory about him trying to resolve the Karabagh issues in the eyes of the west to gain ligitimacy is immoral. You gotta love our uneducated president who knows nothing about politics.
