Fundraising Record: Armenians pledge more than $35 million in annual Thanksgiving appeal

Despite the raging global economic and financial crises, Armenians around the world have made a collective effort to gather a record high pledged donation of more than $35 million in a charity telethon for the rebuilding of Armenia and Karabakh.

The 11th annual Armenia Fund (www.armeniafund.org) telethon on Thanksgiving Day was held in Los Angeles, Calif. USA, but the biggest donation came from Russia, where businessman Samvel Karapetyan pledged $15 million for building a hospital in Karabakh.

The Armenia Fund is just another way for Armenians living comfortably in the Diaspora to assuage their consciences about all the people in Armenia and Artsakh who can't move outlike they did. It's almost as if the Fund is saying - here is some money, so stay where you are. We left but if you poor suckers do the same then the country will be an empty parcel of land. What Armenia and Artsakh need are human resources, human know-how and human investment.

Why is everyone persecuting Andy? As if he had said something strange or outrageous? Well, everyone know that the money does contribute to some projects and everyone also knows that a lot of it goes to satisfy one other form of corruption. As to the record hight of the pledge, I would just underline that most of it is just two or three persons. It is not an ALL Armenian effort. who knows, maybe its even Serj Sarkisyan injecting some funds through a couple of people to show that he has support from Diaspora and abroad. all the people I in the Diaspora know consider Serj a gangster.

Andy and Samvel To give you peace of mind read the finanacial report of Armenian Fund and you will understand where the money go. Try to see the half full of the glass. Go to Artsakh and you will see with your own eyes where the money go. I did. If would be any doubt then important organizations and personalities would not contribute.

Andy that is the biggest bogus ive ever heard of. What part of NON PROFIT organization do you not understand? do you even know how many projects have been already made and are still to come?. This money runs through an organization on a International basis and it doesn't run through the government. The government has no control over the fund. The diaspora does.

What a shame,90% of the people I am in contac here in Armenia feel, they will see no benefit whatsoever from marathon collection, coruption will kick in and recive most of it, in fact the people think we in diaspora are idiots, where I live most of the luxury homes are owned not by buisnessmen, but corrupt goverment officials, I asked my co-workers if they watched the telethon, all 12 of them laughed at me.
