Explosion and fire at chemical plant in Armenia

Two explosions within a space of about five minutes rocked a sprawling chemical plant in southern Yerevan at about 6.40 pm Thursday.

The explosions were followed by a huge fire at a chloroprene production shop at Nairit, the region’s largest synthetic rubber producing plant. The two explosions could be heard by residents living in the nearby area.

Sixteen fire-fighting vehicles reportedly rushed to the scene soon after the incident and were fighting fire late on Thursday. The fire rated as 'huge' was reportedly localized.

Police had sealed off the area leading to the plant and part of at least one broad avenue, Bagratunyats, in the capital’s Shengavit district was blocked for pedestrians and motorists.

This is a tragedy for Armenia and those who lost their loved ones. I hope the investigators are thorough and receive complete cooperation. Remember that the Bhopal, India disaster was a result of sabotage... it could happen again anywhere, anytime.

Funny thing is that my friend called me this morning and told me that people, including firefighters, were poisoned, but that the news had not reported this fact...

It is a real tragedy. But who is at fault? they will refer to human error again. perhaps. but Nairit hastily resumed production to make government feel happy and have something on tv to show. but its obsolete equipment makes it dangerous to operate. now who is to blame, i don't think we will ever know.

Why is it that I don't believe the statement that the "explosion and fire at the plant did not threaten the area’s environment" ? I wish the authorities would be more forthcoming and honest to avoid any further health damages by asking people to take preventive measures of some sort. I am looking forward to reading a more detailed journalistic analysis of the situation in the coming hours/days/week.
