A new twist in Yerevan elections: Opposition refuses mandates in City Council

Citing a “disgraceful” election Armenia’s main opposition declared late on Monday that they refuse to pick their earned mandates in the City Council of Yerevan.

“The Armenian National Congress is not going to work with these authorities,” A1 Plus quoted opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan as telling his numerous supporters at a rally in downtown Yerevan.

Vicken, you made some premature and false accusation, you made some childish assumptions that holds no merit. I live in Armenia, I am an Armenian, and I did vote against the Sargsyan regime. Having said that, if everytime there is an election and Levon starts accusing this party and that of rigging the election, this kind of attitude eventually wears off thin, its like that guy "calling wolf" all and everytime. American and European observers are not stupid, they know that Armenia is mired in corruption. Whether it is Levon or Serzh, I see no difference between the two. Unfortunately for Armenians, the whole world realizes our ugly characters, such as: Greed, Thievery, Selfishness and the list goes on and on. Why do you think 1/5 of the population live like cattle? Because of inhumane treatment of the poor Armenians on the hands of their bretheren. As for your ignorant tantrums about ARF and my (party?) How old are you Vicken? You sounded so young and immature. It boggles my mind seeing Armenia Now allowing this much primitive logic pass the censors. It is not your fault, but....................Grow up!!!

because of people like Suren and James, we will always remain a "donkey nation" (sorry for my wording-but its truth), a backward, poor and small nation, that are led by emotions, superstitions, bad traditions, ... do you really care about Armenia or about your feelings? about free, democratic state or about your beloved ARF and what Levon did to your party 20 years ago..shame on you..when you will learn from progressive nations how to build a state, how to struggle for a free, forward-thinking society and not led by Gagos, beaten by gangsters and eating kebab and speaking loud about Karabagh, that won't make u any more patriotic than others, and to US "armenians" and diasporans of all types, do you know where is the location of Armenia on the map ???? do you care for 1 million people living below 100$ a month income? should i belive your rethoric and advises??? and your overzealous defence for ARF and hate for opposition (becuz of LTP)????

How many people are left in Armenia anyway? One million? According to official data there are still over 3 million. Also when people are not in Armenia anymore, they still do vote. And surprizingly they vote in favor of Sargsyan... How come how come... All the histeria of war with Azerbaijan, tensions with Turkey, these are no problems. Armenians don't leave their country because of a threat of war or because the border with Turkey is closed. Armenians kill their own people. We should really shame to even talk about Genocide, when we are treating our own people like cattle and killing them in a more painful way.

Well Rahageets, it is the foreign observers, and not the corrupt Armenians who proclaimed this elections relatively fair. We all can't stand up to see corruption, theft, and rigged elections, but let's get this thing over with and move on, there are other important events that the nation has to take care of. Americans too are tired of Levons childish tantrums. Is there an end to Levons behavior? No, do you see an end of corruption in Armenia? No. So, why worry???????

Dear Pascal, please consider what exactly the monitors are monitoring, and what their statement represents: a tiny slice of the electoral process. Do monitors "monitor" the fairness of press/TV coverage of candidates/platforms before elections? No. Do they observe bribery? No. Do they observe bullying before election day? No (it is even questionable that they see it DURING election day!) Do they have the physical resources to monitor a voting site from beginning to end? NO! The monitors are merely a formality, since Armenia is part of EU/EC structures. They cannot utter a single word that might rile up Russia, whose sphere of influence Armenia is under. The current regime knows all this. So please consider these facts before coming to conclusions about what Armenian political parties/individuals should do with their time. And please, don't assume that Armenia is making steps toward a stable democracy on the basis of monitor reports!

Anyone who believes that the May 31 elections were free and fair is a blind idiot!!! Anyone who continues to support the present regime after all that has occured since the 2008 presidential elections, March 1st massacre, and noe the May 31 rigges elections, must have their head up their a--. Get real folks. If you have any alternatives to HAK let's hear them!! Otherwise, stop sitting on the fence hoping things will improve on their own.

European, American and other moniters reaffirmed that these elections were fairly eventless. So I don't see any merit whatsoever in LTPs allegations of fraud. Who else does LTP want to monitor this and future elections? Seriously, enough is enough! It is high time that LTP retire and do things that he does well, that is "taking care of Matenataran."

It doesn't look like Levon has the mandate to even remain as opposition leader, never mind becoming elected for anything. He is a spent force and should give way to a younger and more vigorous opposition leader - if there is one.

Levon is no savior of the Armenian nation, but the reality is that he was the only alternative in these mayoral elections, and his party was ALONE in struggling for free and fair elections for the citizens of Yerevan. Those who are not overly emotional about LTP/ANC and who haven't sold out to the Republicans must sooner or later realize that the healthy survival of the Armenian state depends on freely elected representatives in government. Let Levon be freely elected by a free, fair institutionalized electoral structure. If you are not satisfied with him, vote him out. Right now, the ANC and Heritage are the only parties that are interested in establishing such a structure. If you are happy with having no say in who is running the country, then don't support them!

Levon is a criminal and traitor, he is pro Turkish and pro Israel and pro NATO, he has the support of western intelligence agencys, and that why Yerevanian politicians can't touch him. I also dont like Sargsyan very much. But if opposition in Armenia means Levon than I rather have Sargsyan... For me Levon is proof we Armenians are not good in politics.

ArmeniaNow, I would like to suggest you, in the name of our nation and in the name of our brotherly Artsakh: Make an appeal to the international community and ask support from our Christian brothers and sisters from all around the world to support the Christian people of Artsakh who are struggling for freedom. Write articles to condemn the false information spread by the Azeri propaganda. It is important that the world has the right information about Artsakh. Please ArmeniaNow, make a difference. Make an appeal to the the Christian world. We have to fight for our goal, which is the freedom of our brothers in Artsakh. Thank You

Levon adds fuel to the fire. He sucked as a president when he banned ARF and made concessions to the Turks. He didn't take a constructive approach when he ran for president for the second time either. He is now crying afoul for failing the mayoral election. A constructive and credible opposition is needed in Armenia but I don't think Levon and his clan represent the credibility nor the honesty we expect from politicians.

Is there a reason why city mayors along with city council members can't be elected directly by voters?

02.06.2009 01:06
Why would Levon - or any nominally sane person - agree to accept fraudulent election results as an admission ticket into a disfunctional government? That would be an implicit acceptance of the current regime's power over the voting process. The main raison d'etre of the ANC is the rigged presidential elections - why shoot themselves in the foot by accepting rigged mayoral elections?

Good Job Levon. Now you are in the same boat as the ARF. You wasted your constituencies votes and have no representation anywhere!!

Dear Sarkis, I can only agree of most of what you saying, but will like to add couple of points, The acceptance of taking and receiving bribe is not acceptable and it is up to the people and a society to get that culture going or not. Armenians were famous for their dignity and self respect, many of our past generations has seen much and much worst situations economicly. It is not an excuse to continue what it has started. Again I accept that we should find solutions but also we should point out the black sides of our society and correct it, to create a Better Nation. In order to do that, if needs sacrifices, the massive involvment of the diaspora, Then be It! Armenians deserve to have the Better options, a Better society, Better and Strong Country and yes dear Sarkis, the Strongest in the region.

I dislike the current regime. But Armenia desn´t need two presdients!! . Levon was and is not honest to Armenians and to his supporters. Levon wnated just to install a secound government in the city hall! Such a politcal is just criminal and treason as the many actions of ruling authorities!

to Padoyan, trust me when I say that it is much easier said then done. Unfortunately we both must represent our arguements with generic cliché's. You put blame on the Armenian citizens and I ask you if you have been to Armenia before. Let us take a step back. You are an Armenian citizen living in Armenia, working as a teacher. As such you make $300 a month (at best). You have a family of four. Then towards the end of exams a student approaches you and offers you a $100 "bribe" for a passing grade (one that he/she doesn't deserve). You will never see this individual again and quite frankly you need the money to support your family. It is a predicament? Why not take the money? because of Honour? Integrity? Look around you, those without such qualities are in the highest positions of power... It is not that easy. Lets start offering solutions, I think this is best! I believe that the next front for the diaspora should be Armenia. We should stop publicizing 'romantic' events aimed at repatriation of Armenians, but rather gather with our local Armenian communities behind closed doors. Lets engage in frank and honest conversations, however conspiratorial they may be. How can 'we' gain power in Armenia and make it what it should be. Why not... the strongest country in the region.

Ive been following the news and the comments made by many about the elections. Well, my dear fellow Armenians, all I can conclude is: - Despite, considering ourselfs one of the oldest civilization, we are far away from being civilized nation - The Famous Armenian "honour" doesnt exist particularly in Armenia, as accepting money, bribes and selling themselfs to whoever pays more is widespread. - We consider ourself as one of the most clever people alongside the Jews, BUT we so called Elect leaders who believe in disrespecting any other Armenian with abusing their power. How clever is that? Therefor I believe, that Democracy isnt made for Armenians, we should go back to military rule, as we dont deserve it. Dear Armenian people, dont blame the failure to the leaders, but only on yourself! as you elect them and the choice is yours. and finally, how cheap is the dignity of Armenians, how cheap you can be bought at?
