President Sargsyan holds consultations on possible amnesty

President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday held consultations with the participation of senior representatives of law-enforcement structures on the subject of the proposal of declaring an amnesty in Armenia, the presidential press service reported the same day.

“In addition to the appeal for submitting proposals on the necessity and terms of declaring amnesty that was directed to all political forces, public figures and the Public Council on May 28, Serzh Sargsyan instructed corresponding departments to submit their proposals on terms and legal procedures of the amnesty until June 15,” Sargsyan’s press office said in a brief statement.

“The administration of the Republic of Armenia president has been instructed to summarize proposals received from political forces, figures and the Public Council,” it added.

Active discussions about a possible amnesty for dozens of opposition supporters that remain jailed for their alleged roles in last year’s post-election unrest, began after Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said about two weeks ago that the president would declare an amnesty for the jailed oppositionists on May 28. Later, however, Abrahamyan retracted his statement as his spokesman said it solely reflected the latter’s “good wishes”.

Nevertheless, speaking to the media on May 28, marked as [First] Republic Day in Armenia, President Sargsyan did appeal to political forces, public figures and the recently formed Public Council to submit their proposals on the necessity and terms of an amnesty.
