The Parliament of Bulgaria on Wednesday rejected a resolution for the country to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide.
The resolution was introduced by the Ataka party, described by "Sofia Echo" news as "a party whose platform includes an overall anti-Turkish stance". Volen Siderov, leader of Ataka, against the background of the centuries of Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, said that it was natural for a "patriotic party" such as his to recognise the Armenian genocide, as reported by Echo.
"To hide certain aspects of history because they are not good for you as a country is, to me, demagoguery," Siderov said.
Several Bulgarian cities have passed recognition resolutions, however this is not the first time the National Assembly has thwarted such efforts.
