While Armenia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan has called Monday a day “that will be written in gold”, neighboring Turkey is seeing red following the French Senate’s passage of a bill criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide.

In a letter sent soon after the Paris vote early Tuesday morning Armenia time, Nalbandyan praised France’s friendship with Armenia and its defense of human rights.

In Ankara, meanwhile, the head of Turkey’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee broadcast via Twitter that “France opened a black page in its history”.

In Armenia’s capital, fireworks lit the Yerevan sky near the French embassy, while in neighboring Turkey plans are being made for a fiery reaction to a decision that Turkey calls “irresponsible” and one that its ambassador to France says “totally ruptures relations” between France and Turkey.
