Yerevan-Echmiadzin-Diaspora: Sargsyan says church separate from state, part of Armenian life

President Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of the church-state relations, especially “at the current historical stage for the country”, as he spoke before participants of the third meeting, at the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin Monday, of top clerical representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church’s worldwide dioceses.

“Let’s admit it. The regulation of church-state relations is not easy. The church must not interfere with the state’s affairs and the state must not interfere with the church’s affairs. This simple formula, however, is difficult to apply in life, because in our case it is nearly impossible to distinguish the border where our spiritual culture ends and where our secular culture, in particular political culture, begins,” said Sargsyan. “I think that today we are close to the golden mean… Time, of course, will make its unavoidable corrections in this sphere, but in essence we are on the right path. State structures are ready to continue and deepen this cooperation that already yields its positive results.”

A poll was conducted 4 days ago in Yerevan to see how popular this crooked catholicos was, and the surprising answer was: 94.3% of people(2,500 people polled through telephone) thought that this catholicos is the most crooked person with ties to high level criminal elements in Armenia and abroad. His sexual escapades are well documented, So, today Armenians are held hostage by crooked politicians and crooked clergy whose ONLY aim is make money and lots of it. Has anyone seen this catholicos building a school in a poor district? Has anyone seen him visit the poor and the homeless? Has he ever washed the feet of any Christian? I rather have Nassreddin Hoxa as my catholicos than a man of cloth who is deeply involved with non-Christian activities. I hope he is reading the posts here, what a joke this crooked man is.

Armenian catholicos should neither be a „tool“ in the hand of authorities nor a „tool“ instrument in the hand of any political party – including dashnaks! Catholicos should just be a catholicos (which is not th ecase today) and not a “king” or “queen Elizabeth” of GB

These two appear like they are secret lovers or something. The Catholicos gets what he wantes it terms of property and concessions (including Armenian church hostory in the schools) and Serzh weekly gets atonement for his myriad sins from the hands of Karekin. A match made in heaven?

armen, i don´t think a "Clilicia catholicos" would bring much changes- a change of mentality is more important! a Cilicia catholicos used to have even much better lux ury live, therefore a Cilicia catholicos would be to expansive for “poor” hayastan. Beside this, nobody should forget the rule and enmity created by the Catholicos Khoren I of Cilicia in 70´s /80´s !

Were First Century Christians involved in the Roman government? No Therefore why does the Armenian church have such close ties with the Armenian Government?

I am thinking of converting and changing my name to Murray Goldstien. May those who have sold Antranig Pasha down the excrement river go to Jahenem and quickly. My ancestors in Western Armenia will never forget.

when regime change happens and these crooks in gov't are put behind bars for corruption, this useless Catholicos must also be moved aside and be replaced with the Cilicia catholicos.

Typical "dog lick dog" love affair between two crooked men, one a politician, the other a supposed cleric..serving only their own interests.

These concerns on both sides are natural. But Sargsian is a politician of reason and he knows what he's doing better than anyone else. I see a better future for Armenia with what Sargsian is doing and I think it is only right that he gets support from society and even those opposing him for different reasons. God bless Armenia

forgotten to mention.. Unfortunately, it seems Catholicos Karekin II is for the authorities "the same" as Catholicos Khoren I ("master of unity & example/lord of impartiality !") was for the Tashnaks!

I wish success for our politicians by there efforts in solving all Armenian challenges/issues… First step wound be try to NOT cheat and to lie to the nation! Deal is done. Tomorrow the nation – this is certainly the so called “private public council” - will be asked to approve another document! Everything looks perfect. Holiness Karekin received St. Mesrop Mashtots Order for his loyalty and “approval of protocols” . Armenian Church is a part of my national identity, still I ask, why should a (our) church leader be decorated with gold and “order”, a luxury live (Aram I included) and so on? Vazgen Manukian is certainly the next to receive the “order”. The former adviser to the British Embassy in Hayastan being promoted already with a top government job!
