I really get a kick from these "unity loving" types like Mariam Jon who spout Christiianity and love of the church but agrees that cops in Yerevan have the right to beat up a small group of protestors just because they are Levon supporters and somehow "disturb her peace" (probably in some cozy corner of the diaspora somewhere). Or maybe she feels threatened by protestors as she sips her caffe latte at Cafe Paris on Abovyan Street. She comments, "Protesters look like a lot of bored kids and adults. Khaidaragootoon. How amote to go around town shouting, and with those nasty signs." Get a freekin life M.J. and let people exercise their right to free speech and assembly. Or don't those principles fit in with your "Christian values" If you're from the diaspora - Stay the hell away from Yerevan!! We have enough ass-backwards thinkers like you here already.

The Armenian Apostolic Church and our faith is the only thing that has kept our people, our country, and our culture together and on the face of the earth for thousands of years. Without our church and our faith, we would have all been gone a long time ago. Moslems on all sides, scattered by Genocide all over the world; it has been our faith and church that has kept us Armenian. Wherever Armenians have gone, they have built a church as soon as possible. It is where we pray, wed, celebrate, baptize and pray for our dead. The church is the very foundation of our culture.

Here we go again with the state and church walking in lock-step.As if Abovian wasn't crowded enough now they want to push through a new church? Crazy. You have Katoghike up the block and the giant cathedral on the other side of the Vernisage. Don't get me started on what they want to do at St. Katoghike..They want to ruin what could become a beautiful corner in downtown Yerevan by erecting some monstrosity to become the summer residence of the Catholicos. Why? Just because Hovnanian gave a few million to build some mounment to his mom? These urban planners have no sense of style or proportion. Just walk down Northern Avenue and see their "vision" of what Yerevan is supposed to be. The entire land swap at Moskva Cinmea smells fishy and is probably some pay-off for a favor. The entire process is @#%%$^&**&%#. Literally!!

How old was the church there before? Is the new church going to be replica of the original one or a modern one?

There are more than enough churches in Armenia. Who are you trying to impress? Georgians? It is 21st century for gods sake, built a school, art gallery, theater or something useful. I do understand and appreciate the role of church in preservation of Armenian culture and language, but the times are changing, we need urgently to transform our heritage into digital form. I doubt that modern Armenian church is up to challenge of preserving national identity and culture nowadays.
