Vanishing Legacy: Tumanyan's library in Tbilisi shuts down

The Hovhannes Tumanyan Library in Tbilisi has stopped operation since the beginning of this year. The library, named for one of Armenia’s most beloved writers, has been housed in his former residence since 1909.

Georgian businessman Archi Lejava, who in 1997 acquired the premise for $162,000 from the municipality of Tbilisi now decided to empty it.

Tumanyan (1869-1923) is the author of favored poems, lyrics, ballads, stories, fairy tales. “Anoush” and “Almast” Operas based on Tumanyan’s poems continue to be staged internationally.

This is an abomination! It's unacceptable that the municipality would let go of such a cultural icon for Armenians, who are a valid minority and constituent of the Georgian state. Perhaps it's polemic to say so, but I suppose it's also the Armenian community's and Diaspora's responsibility as well to ensure that such iconic figures' legacy lives on. Where was the AGBU or other Armenian foundations in this instance?

I am really sorry for Georgians. They really have a shity president. We complain about ours but at least Serj is not stupid enough to take Armenia in a useless stupid war for no reason. I hope the Georgian will come to their senses and stop supporting that idiot Saakashvili who is only thinking aof looking good for the US and EU and filling his pockets instead of thinking about his people.

This proves that Armenian heritages all over the world must be care by Armenians own. I can remember that how Georgians tried to turn the Armenian monastry, called Osh Vank, in eastern Turkey, to Georgian by writing Georgian words on the wall.

Once again it proves that Georgia is heading towards becoming a Fascist State under the leadership of President Saakashvili. Never before in the history of our nation did we have a leader so radical and so anti-Armenian. It’s a real shame that normal and friendly relations with your neighbouring state is left in distant past. It’s absolutely disgraceful and illogical behaviour!!
