Weightlifting: Armenia youth in gold performance in Spain

Armenia’s Smbat Margaryan (w.c.56kg), a silver medalist of the 2010 European Weightlifting Championships (among seniors), won gold at the European Youth Weightlifting Championships being held this week in Valencia,
Spain, according to a report by the National Olympic Committee of Armenia. On Wednesday, Margaryan lifted 240kg in snatch, clean and jerk combination to become the continent’s champion.

Another Under-17 weightlifter representing Armenia, Vladik Karapetyan repeated his teammate’s success by winning the European title in the 62-kg division on Thursday. Karapetyan lifted 253kg in snatch, clean and jerk combination to win gold. Armenian Olympic champion Israyel Militosyan’s 15-year-old son Vardan finished sixth among 20 participants lifting a total of 235kg (105kg + 130kg).

Armenia’s only female participant, Izabela Yalyan won silver in the 53-kg section, lifting 163 kg in snatch, clean and jerk combination.

The competitions in Valencia are continuing. Armenia’s participants in other sections include: Raffi Melikyan and Aren Nerseisyan (w.c. 77kg), Azat Sayadyan (w.c. 85kg), Hamlet Poghosyan (w.c. 94kg), Misha Muradyan and Gor Minasyan (w.c. +105kg).
