Armenian President: Karabakh’s return to Azerbaijan is out of question

During the recent working visit to Nagorno Karabakh on August 29, the president of Armenia once again stated that Armenia’s efforts must constantly be directed at making not only Azerbaijan but all other countries too, understand that Karabakh’s return to Azerbaijan is out of question, and that Artsakh (NKR) is a viable state as it is.

The Nagorno Karabakh issue seemed to be put to rest after the sixth meeting of the presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia on June 17 and the major ceasefire violation by the Azeri immediately following the meeting, when four Armenian soldiers died as a result of the attack in Martakert region of Nagorno Karabakh.

Several facts, however, draw attention to the issue again, among them: Azerbaijan has submitted another anti-Armenian resolution to the 64th session of the UN General Assembly to be held on September 9; the Russian military base deployment terms have been extended till 2044, according to the Armenian-Russian protocol of August 20; and the Russian president’s forthcoming official visit to Baku scheduled for September 2-3.

As reported by the official site of the Armenian president, Serzh Sargsyan has stated that the Resolution on “Violation of international human rights and observation of international standards in the occupied Azeri territories” put forward by the Azeris will have no significant impact either on the political or economic lives of both Armenia and Karabakh, nor can it affect security issues. The president is convinced that only Islamic countries will support it, as an act of solidarity.

“I am certain, however, that all those countries which are for a peaceful settlement of the issue through negotiations, will vote against the resolution. Or, they will at least abstain from voting at all, because they understand that passing such a resolution cannot have a positive outcome for the negotiation process,” said the Armenian president.

It should be noted that in case of abstentions, if the number of ‘yes’ votes prevails over ‘no’s, the resolution will pass, as a similar one did in 2008.
