The third telecommunications operator will start its activity in the mobile sector of Armenia next week: France Telecom’s key brand, Orange, will face a strict competition.
Two mobile operators running in Armenia have already conquered the essential part of the market. According to the recent data stated by telecom operator VivaCell-MTS, it has more than two million subscribers, and as for another operator, Beeline, (as of data of June 2009) it has more than 480,000 mobile subscribers.
“We will have two types of subscribers: those who are eager to use mobile connection for the first time, and those who are already subscribers of other mobile operators, but who wish to try to use our service, too,” Bruno Duthoit, the chief executive of the Orange-Armenia brand presented their future market. “Our research showed that, for example, about 20 percent of 15-year-old teenagers do not use mobile connection.”
A week before its official launch, Orange signed the second memorandum of cooperation with one of Armenia’s high educational institutions – State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA). (Last week such a memorandum was also signed with the Armenian-Russian (Slavonic) University in Yerevan)
“I am especially happy that this memorandum is signed a week before our entrance to the market. Even though our company is commercial, technologies lie in the basis of our activity. Thus cooperation with State Engineering University of Armenia is very favorable for us,” Duthoit says.
According to the memorandum, Orange and SEUA will realize scientific-research projects, they will hold professional trainings with the participation of their specialists, and A-students will have internships in Orange.
“When we have a chance to deal with people who are interns, later we will have a better idea about them as specialists, and we will be able to choose and hire them. However, it does not mean that we will not hire other people,” Duthoit told ArmeniaNow.
Ruben Aghgashyan, a pro-rector at SEUA, told ArmeniaNow that the cooperation between the company and the university started still nine months ago. “Being an engineering university, we will not be able to correspond to the current labor market standards unless we cooperate with such organizations,” he says.
