The two-day meetings of John Prescott, Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) co-rapporteur on Armenia have raised a wave of serious distrust of PACE activities among the opposition and public.

Following what was reported as a confrontational meeting with members of the opposition on Monday, Prescott again rankled locals on Tuesday when he met with relatives of the ten victims of March 1 post-election clashes in 2008.

The relatives left saying they were irritated and surprised and claimed that Prescott refused to listen to them.

“The meeting lasted 25 minutes, 15 minutes of which he [Prescott] talked, and he told us that he had only two questions, asking whether we had been aware of the interim report of the Special Investigation Service, and whether we had managed to get acquainted with the preliminary investigation materials. We did not manage to say or clarify anything else. We had the impression as if the meeting with us was meant not to get acquainted with the real situation but it was simply quite formal,” Sargis Kloyan, father of Gor Kloyan, 28, a 'Cheryomukha-7' victim, told ArmeniaNow.

The parents were surprised to learn that Prescott who in October 2011 presented the report, and Resolution 1837 (saying that “the page of March 1 is finally considered to be closed”) and was adopted the same month, did not know that the relatives of the victims had not had an opportunity to get acquainted with the preliminary investigation materials even until now.

The relatives of the March 1 victims asked Prescott how he grounded the closure of the March 1 page, however, Alla Khachatryan, mother of another March 1 victim Tigran Khachatryan, said that “He was simply avoiding the questions and silenced us.”

On Monday, Prescott refused to comment to an RFE reporter on his meeting with the opposition. A summary statement of his visit is expected at the conclusion of his trip.
