The heavy snow in Yerevan caused great inconvenience for the city’s residents, especially for those who come from Yerevan’s suburbs and try to reach their work places with grave difficulty.

The non-stop snow hinders traffic, and no sooner are streets cleaned, than the snow covers them again. Zvartnots International Airport has been closed since this morning; Gyumri’s reserve airport is also closed. More than 15 interregional and inter-community highways are either blocked or impassable; and in the Lanjik-Mastara section of Yerevan-Gyumri interstate highway, in Amasia and Ashotsk regions wind has increased and there is a threat of blizzard.

Precipitations throughout Armenia have started since this month; however the snowfall has become heavier since Thursday. Even though the final data of today are not published yet, the capital has accumulated over a foot of snow this week. The temperature in Yerevan last night was -5C - -7C (23F-19F), and +2C-4C (36F-39F) – in the afternoon.

According to the data of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring State Service, the precipitations will continue until February 12. After February 12 the temperature will fall, then the sky will be cloudless and the temperature in flat countries will be -10C - -12C (14F-10F) and in mountainous areas – up to -25C (-13F).

The Yerevan municipality claims that the snow cleaning works have not been stopped throughout the whole night, however because it does not stop snowing, the roads become impassible again. From January 31 to February 8 the municipality has used 570.08 tons of technical salt and 1346.4 cubic meters sand (for gritting) to remove the consequences of the snow.

“A total of 178 special machineries are involved in [Yerevan’s] cleaning works since the second half of February 9. Taking into consideration the non-stop heavy snow the Yerevan municipality appealed to construction companies running in Yerevan and asked for their machinery and assistance in removing the snow throughout the city,” representatives of Yerevan municipality’s public relations department report.
