Armenian police report arrests, gun confiscations in Yerevan gang fight

Armenian Police published on its official website Tuesday details of the mass clash of gangs in a Yerevan suburb in which dozens were detained and a large amount of weapons was confiscated.

Below is the text of the report:

“On April 17, at about 6:00 p.m. the Nor Nork Police department in Yerevan was alerted to acts of hooliganism taking place in the park in front of the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute in Nor Nork district, Yerevan.

The task groups that arrived at the scene (Davit Bek Street) witnessed actions of hooliganism, with the involvement of some 60-70 people, in the backyard of ‘Crazy Horse’ café.

Warning shots were fired and the territory was immediately surrounded to prevent mass disorders. Keeping the situation under control, police officers disarmed and handcuffed the participants of the hooliganism.

Fifty-five people were taken to the Police department, 33 of them were detained.

While disarming those people, examining and combing the area of the incident, 12 pistols were found, including three SS and four Makarov pistols, two revolvers, one Beretta and one Brevet guns, and one pistol of foreign make but yet unknown type; all of the pistols were charged.

It was figured out that the quarrel among the mass disorder participants occurred based on money issues. Those who committed the hooliganism were mainly former convicts and drug addicts.

Replying to the speculations in some media, we inform that the participants of the disorder are not members of any political party or an NGO.

A criminal case has been instituted in connection with the incident (part 3 of Article 258, and part 1 of Article 235 of the Criminal Code of Armenia).

The details of the incident are being investigated, the preliminary investigation continues.
