President’s London performance: Sargsyan’s speech scores points at home

Sargsyan’s speech at Chatham House has been qualified as the president’s best speech so far.

President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech at Chatham House British Royal Institute of International Affairs in London got a positive reaction in Armenian political circles.

“Generally it was one of the unique successful speeches, where Serzh Sargsyan expressed a rather firm position concerning Nagorno-Karabakh issue, and he presented the main reasons for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict from the international tribune,” says Suren Surenyants, member of the political council of the Republic Party, adding that judging by the recent opinions voiced from both sides of the debate, he came to the conclusion that the talks have reached a deadlock.

According to Surenyants, who supports the Armenian National Congress (main oppositional group in the country, headed by Armenia’s first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan), confirming the main position of Armenia concerning the Armenian-Turkish relations, Sargsyan “made a mistake by (once again) taking the role of one who waits, then responds.”

In his Wednesday address in London, though, the president stressed that “if our doubts are confirmed, namely that the aim of Turkey is making delays and not normalizing the relations, then we will have to cease the process.”

According to Surenyants, there is no need to wait for Turkey’s decision, but rather, it is necessary to ratify them (the protocols) proving that Armenia remains loyal to its international obligations; and if Turkey tries to disrupt the ratification of the protocols, Armenia will simply get out of the process.

Giro Manoyan, Director of the International Secretariat of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation ‘Dashnaktsutyun’ Bureau in Yerevan, also approved of Sargsyan’s speech, however, expressing concerns over Armenia’s readiness to wait for Turkey.

“It is already clear that the process is being delayed. What is he (Serzh Sargsyan) waiting for? And as for the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, it was a rather successful speech,” Manoyan told ArmeniaNow.

Meanwhile, Larisa Alaverdyan, NA deputy from the oppositional Heritage Party, believes that the standpoint expressed in his speech “was good, yet it doesn’t match his actions”.

“These positions (expressed in Sargsyan’s speech) have been voiced since 1988, but do not become a state policy. It was a chance (for Sargsyan) to put on a brave face, but it would be better if the implemented policy were as correct as the speech was,” Alaverdyan told ArmeniaNow.
