During its session on Thursday, the Government of Armenia rejected the legislative initiative on holding the upcoming parliamentary elections solely by 100-percent proportional election system.

The parliamentary opposition’s Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun parties had motioned for changing to a 100-percent proportional election system.

The necessity for passing to a 100-percent proportional election system in the lead-up to the parliamentary elections is incomprehensible, Armenia’s Deputy Justice Minister Grigor Muradyan told news reporters.

In his words, the change toward a 100-percent proportional election system must be carried out in phases and smoothly, and today is not the right time for such change. “The election processes have commenced, and that transition could get in the way of those processes,” Muradyan said.
