Several urban and rural communities of Armenia have won presidential awards as the most active participants in mass sporting events of 2009. Awards at the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs on Wednesday were given in three categories – “The Best Sporting Urban Community”, “The Best Yard”, and “The Best Rural Community”.

The town of Abovyan in Armenia’s Kotayk province was recognized as the best urban community for sport and received a monetary prize of 1.5 million drams (about $4,000 -- three prizes were given in each category); the village of Aragats in Aragatsotn province was recognized as “best rural community” and awarded 1 million drams (about $2,600).

One of the yards in Yerevan’s Shengavit community was recognized as the “best yard” and the Shengavit prefect received 1 million drams. The second prize in this category (1 million drams) was given to one of the yards of the town of Charentsavan in the Kotayk province and the third prize (500,000 drams) was given to a yard in the Taron community in Vanadzor, Lori province.

Kapan in Syunik province, Echmiadzin in Armavir province and Ijevan in Tavush province were recognized as the most “sporting” towns in 2009. The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs handed certificates of gratitude to the mayors of these towns.
