Sukhudyan is glad that a lawsuit was eventually filed against Avagyan.

A group of activists, after months of fighting, managed to succeed in the controversial case over Nubarashen Boarding School N11 for mentally retarded children, where they accused the teacher in sexual harassment toward a mentally disabled teenager.

Last week it became known a lawsuit was filed against Levon Avagyan, former teacher of Armenian language at the Nubarashen Boarding School, with charges of sexual misconduct accompanied with violence (Article 142 of the Criminal Code).

As part of the UN special scholarship program, environmentalist Mariam Sukhudyan and other social activists suspected cases of violence against students. But after a video package with interviews with students was broadcasted by Armenian Public Television (H1 channel) Sukhudyan was charged with “false betrayal” at the beginning, and later with “slander.”

“I am very glad that a lawsuit was eventually filed (against him), and that Avagyan will be punished,” Sukhudyan told ArmeniaNow.

Sukhudyan’s criminal case has not been quashed yet, but Nona Galstyan, Sukhudyan’s attorney, (Sukhudyan has not been cleared of charges yet) told ArmeniaNow that she believes that an objective investigation will be held. “We will continue struggling, and Sukhudyan’s case will be quashed.”
