The Armenian government has earmarked 125.4 million drams – about $1.4 – toward cleaning some 200 hectares of coastal area on Lake Sevan, as announced by Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan Monday.

The lake has risen dramatically over the past decade, consuming vegetation and even man-made structures that had lined its shores when the Sevan was at a critically low point. Ecologists now worry that the affected area could become swamp and, again, endanger Armenia’s primary water source and recreational getaway spot.

State funds are to be spent on clearing flooded areas, reconstructing drainage systems and repairing/replacing roads that had been overtaken by the rising waters. Additional money is to be spent on breeding trout.
