Food Fine: Eighteen fines handed out for expired goods in 2011

Consumer Union Ngo president Armen Poghosyan says 18 food shops were fined in Armenia in 2011 for selling outdated products – a common problem here.
Violations included soft drinks, dairy products, packaged fish products and canned coffee.

Awareness Day: Center reports on status of AIDS in Armenia

On December 1, AIDS Awareness Day, the AIDS Prevention Republican Center reports that there are 1,136 patients infected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Armenia. Over the past year, 165 new cases were registered – a higher report of infection than previous years.

Toxic Concerns: Research program will study what to do about Nubarashen dump

Goalball for a good goal: Armenia celebrates World Sight Day with sporting event

World Sight Day was celebrated by a sport event for the first time in Armenia on Thursday as a goalball championship was held in Armenia on the occasion of the day. Four teams from Yerevan, Gyumri, Abovyan and Echmiadzin participated in the competition.

The goalball tournament that started on Thursday morning at the Mika gym was a real festive occasion for 12 athletes of different ages who have sight problems. They did their best to win.

Concerns over Population Demography: Is selective abortion skewing gender balance?

In more concerns surrounding procreation in Armenia, the Council of Europe (CoE) raises an alarm that more boys than girl are born in Armenia. This contradicts the proportionality defined by the nature, and “leads to serious suspects” that selective abortions determined by a child’s sex are done in Armenia, which may have “serious social, demographic consequences.”

We are tired of eating stale produce, curdled yogurt, lifeless fruits, awful farm-raised fish, and terrible-tasting outdated chicken at Yerevan supermarkets. I can't believe only 18 shops were fined. More than 1800 should have been fined in order to send a message. ...
