Home Court: Diaspora and non-Armenian hoop women happy to wear Hayastan basketball colors

Two United States-trained Armenian basketball players and one American now playing for Armenia in the ongoing European Division C Championship in Yerevan, are enjoying playing to Armenia’s enthusiastic fans, even if in the lowest of professional divisions.

Having lived oversees since infancy, Christine Kepenekian, 24, and Arpine Amirkhanian, who turned 21 on Wednesday, very occasionally played under Armenia’s flag as part of the Ararat team, in Glendale, California. And (non-Armenian) American Amanda Jackson, 25, helped Armenia’s revived team, Hatis, make a little bit of history in Armenian basketball by reaching the playoff stage in a prestigious European club tournament earlier this season.

Basketball: Armenia wins Division B promotion despite dropping tense final to Maltese

Despite a loss to Malta (74-65) in Saturday’s championship game of FIBA Division C women’s basketball, Armenia have advanced into a new level of the European league.

This coming season Armenia – facing its second schedule after the popular Hatis club was revived last year – will move to Group B play, presumably facing stronger competition. (FIBA consists of three divisions, with ‘A’ being the top.)

On Top: Armenian women 3-0 in FIBA Division C basketball tourney

Armenia closed out the first round of competition with a perfect 3 wins against no loses in the FIBA Women’s Division C basketball championships ongoing in Yerevan, with a 71-47 win over Andorra Wednesday.

As in its wins over Gibraltar and Moldova, the home team was led in scoring by its recruits from America: Amanda Jackson with 17 points and (Yerevan-born) Christine Kepenekian with 15.

FIBA Division C Championship: Armenian women hoopsters rally for second win

The Armenian women’s national basketball team is two-for-two entering today’s third round of the FIBA Women’s Division C European Championship held in Yerevan.

On Tuesday the home team beat Moldova 71-64, led for the second day by Amanda Jackson, who had a “double-double” Tuesday, as the American netted 25 points, while also pulling down 11 rebounds. California State University Bakersfield’s Christine Kepenikian added 20 points.

FIBA Round 1: Armenia, Moldova and Malta take opening day victories

Armenia’s women’s national basketball team were hardly accommodating hosts to a weak Gibraltar side, as the home team trounced the visitors 98-45 in first-round action of the FIBA Women’s European Championship Division C tournament that opened Monday in Yerevan’s Mika Sports Hall.

Led by (Americans) Amanda Jackson and Christine Kepenekian, who each had 22 points, Armenia never trailed as it dispatched Gibraltar early, leading 21-6 after one quarter (10 minutes) and expanding the lead as the game progressed.

Hoop Time: FIBA Division C tournament underway with Armenia as host

Armenia began hosting the Women’s Division C European Basketball Championship today, welcoming Andorra, Gibraltar, Wales, Scotland, Moldova teams representing the lowest of FIBA’s three divisions, from which Armenia hopes to advance this year.

Through the performance of Armenia’s Hatis team reaching the 2009-10 playoffs and gaining a strong fan support along the way, Yerevan was chosen as site for the biennial tournament that will run through Saturday (July 3).

Basketball: Armenia prepares to host European championships

Armenia is looking to achieve good results during the first major basketball tournament on the level of national teams to be held in the country later this month, according to local basketball officials.

Besides the host nation, the other teams at Women’s European Division C Championships (to be held at Mika Gym in Yerevan from June 28 to July 3) will be Andorra, Moldova and Gibraltar (involved in Group A with Armenia) as well as Wales, Scotland and Malta in Group B. (Azerbaijan has refused to come to Yerevan).

Basketball: Former Eagle to Tryout for Armenian National Team

Former Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball standout Kris Kachaturoff has accepted an invitation to tryout for Armenia’s National Team, the Basketball Federation of Armenia announced today, April 14. Kachaturoff leaves for May 15 for the former republic of the Soviet Union in hopes of earning a spot on the team for the FIBA European Division C Championships, June 28-July 3.

Armenian women’s basketball team Hatis lost in Orenburg, Russia Thursday to the local Nadezhda 80-65 in the second-leg game as part of the Women’s Euro League 1/16 finals and thus dropped out of further competition.

Basketball: Armenian Hatis progress to playoffs after "sixth player" victory over Turks

Armenian women’s basketball club Hatis beat Turkish Besiktas 78-74 in Yerevan Thursday in the sixth and last round of European Cup Group F qualification. The victory secured second place for the Yerevan team (with nine points) and a berth in the playoffs. Besiktas also have nine points, but because of the scored/conceded points difference and two defeats from Hatis (both at home and away) the Istanbul team are third. Sony Athinaikos (Athens, Greece) held on to the top spot in the group.

Basketball: Hatis blame bad refereeing for defeat in Russia; still well positioned for qualification

Yerevan basketball club Hatis suffered their second consecutive defeat in the women’s 2009/2010 European Cup qualifying Group F, this time while traveling to Vologda in northern Russia. Playing against the local team, Chevakata, Thursday, the Armenians lost 91-82 in a game that left Hatis coaches screaming foul over the refereeing.

Soccer: Armenia’s Mika might play Liverpool

Armenia’s FC Mika will have everything to play for when they host a Macedonian team in the second leg of a UEFA Europa League second qualifying round tie in Yerevan on Thursday. In what seemed to be more of a blessing than a curse for any Armenian team at this stage, the tournament’s draw late last week decided that the winner of the Mika v Rabotnicki tie got an underperforming, but, nonetheless, renowned English Premiership club Liverpool as their next opponent in the third and final qualifying round.
