Armenia gained a smashing victory over Gibraltar.
Armenia’s women’s national basketball team were hardly accommodating hosts to a weak Gibraltar side, as the home team trounced the visitors 98-45 in first-round action of the FIBA Women’s European Championship Division C tournament that opened Monday in Yerevan’s Mika Sports Hall.
Led by (Americans) Amanda Jackson and Christine Kepenekian, who each had 22 points, Armenia never trailed as it dispatched Gibraltar early, leading 21-6 after one quarter (10 minutes) and expanding the lead as the game progressed.
Armenia enjoyed support of a filled gym for the late-afternoon game, as entry for the approximately 1,000 seats is free.
In the tournament’s opening game earlier Monday, Moldova defeated Andorra – 88-62. Later, Malta defeated Scotland – 65-34. Six teams are competing in the five-day tournament, with action continuing today as Armenia meet Moldova, Gibraltar play Andorra and Scotland versus Wales.
