Youth World Championships in Azerbaijan

None of the six Armenian boxers taking part in the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, managed to reach the semifinals after losing their fights at earlier stages.

Lightweight (60 kg) Hrayr Matevosyan reached the quarterfinal, but lost to Germany’s Thomas Vahrenholt.

Heavyweight (91 kg) Armen Simonyan, representing Ukraine, also lost in a tense quarterfinal bout to Donat Avdijaj from Germany. (On the way to the quarterfinals Simonyan beat Azerbaijan’s Hajibaba Hajibabayev.)

The championships had brought together over 500 athletes from more than 100 countries and also served as a qualifier for the inaugural Youth Olympics due to be held in Singapore in August. None of the Team Armenia members won qualification.
