A tiebreak was required to decide the winner in Sunday’s Aronyan-Gelfand match

Blitz tiebreak games were required to decide the winner of a hotly contested rapid chess tournament final featuring an Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronyan competing in fast chess against three other grandmasters at a prestigious tournament in Spain Sunday.

Beating Cuban chess master Leinier Dominguez in the semifinal, Aronyan headed for the final of the XXIII Ciudad De Leon tournament (June 3-6) in Leon where he would play Israel’s Boris Gelfand, the winner of the semifinal battle against Spain’s Francisco Vallejo.

The Leon Masters finals played on Sunday proved a battle of nerves as its two opening games ended in a draw.
According to chess news portal www.chessbase.com, Aronyan then outplayed Gelfand in the third game to take the lead, but lost in game four, triggering a blitz tiebreak rule. The Israeli won both tiebreak games and the trophy, leaving Aronyan, the 2009 World Rapid Chess champion, in the second position.
