Georgia’s Nana Dzagnidze needs a draw in the 11th and final round at the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix tournament being hosted in an Armenian resort.
With 8 ½ points scored in ten rounds of the tournament in Armenia’s central town of Jermuk, the Georgian grandmaster has a one-point lead over her closest rival Tatiana Kosintseva from Russia. The two are likely to finish first and second in the tournament that has brought together 12 women grandmasters from seven countries.
Armenia’s Lilit Mkrtchyan has six points after ten games and the other Armenian representative Elina Danielyan has 5 ½ points. Both retained chances for finishing within the top three before the final round scheduled for Monday.
The Grand Prix is a six-tournament series to select the challenger for the women’s world championship. The best three results are used in calculating the winner.
Among the participants in the Jermuk tournament this year are also world champions Maia Chiburdanidze (Georgia), Shen Yang (China) and Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria).
