Banants vs Anorthosis – 0-1

Two Armenian clubs have suffered a setback at the very first stage of the 2010/2011 UEFA Europa League after second-leg matches played Thursday night.

FC Banants and FC Ulis, both representing Yerevan, left the stage after suffering defeats from Anorthosis (Cyprus) and FC Bnei Yehuda (Israel), respectively.

Anorthosis, a refugee football club from Turkish-controlled Famagusta based in Nicosia, had come to Yerevan with a three-goal advantage and had no hard time against the host team, ending the match in a 1-0 victory (and 4-0 on aggregate).

Ulis, who had managed a goalless draw against the Tel Aviv club in Yerevan a week before, lost to Bnei Yehuda in the away tie 0-1 and dropped out of further competition on the aggregate score.

Two more Armenian clubs will be in action in European club tournaments later this month. Pyunik will start their 2010/2011 UEFA Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round with a two-leg tie against FK Partizan (Belgrade, Serbia). The match days will be July 13/14 and July 20/21.

In the second qualifying round of UEFA Europa League Mika will play against FK Rabotnicki (Macedonia), who easily beat Lusitans (Andorra) in the first qualifying round. The match days will be July 15 and 22.

Armenian teams have traditionally underperformed in European club competitions and so far managed no qualification for the main (autumn-spring) stages of tournaments held under the aegis of UEFA.
