FK Partizan v FC Pyunik – 3-1
Armenia’s titleholder let the first match in the two-legged tie against Serbia’s champion slip away as they engaged in UEFA Champions League second qualifying round action Wednesday night.
On their tenth appearance in the top European club competition Yerevan’s FC Pyunik, playing in Belgrade against local FK Partizan, conceded their first goal about half an hour into the match. Pyunik defender Artak Yedigaryan managed to put his team back on level terms a minute later, but two more Partizan goals scored in first-half stoppage time and about a quarter of an hour into the second period set the final score at 3-1 to the home team.
Pyunik will now entertain Partizan in Yerevan on July 21 and will need a win, clear the two-goal deficit to qualify for the next round.
Earlier this month Armenia’s Banants and Ulis featured in the UEFA Europa League, the other pan-European club tournament, were eliminated in the first knockout round after dropping their two-leg ties against Anorthosis (Cyprus) and FC Bnei Yehuda (Israel), respectively.
Another Armenian hopeful, FC Mika, engages in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round tonight (July 15) with an away game in Skopje, Macedonia, against local FK Rabotnicki, who routed an Andorran team in the first qualifying round 11-0 on aggregate. The second-leg match in the Rabotnicki v Mika tie is scheduled to be played in Yerevan on July 22.
Armenian teams have underperformed in European club competitions and so far have achieved no qualification for the main (autumn-spring) stages of tournaments held under the aegis of European soccer’s governing body, UEFA.
