Soccer: More Armenians to join Russian sides

Two leading Armenian national team players have reportedly signed contracts with Russian soccer clubs.

Armenia’s naturalized Brazilian midfielder Marcos Pizzelli, who played for Ukraine’s Metallurh in 2011, signed a three-year deal with Kuban, the Krasnodar club’s official confirmed late last week.

Soccer: Mkhitaryan recognized Armenia’s best player in 2011

Armenia national team playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been recognized as the best soccer player in Armenia in 2011 – for the second time in his career.

The 22-year-old midfielder who plays for Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) received the prize, the Golden Shoe, from Armenian Football Federation (FFA) head Ruben Hayrapetyan at a national team tribute party on Thursday evening, the FFA said. Mkhitaryan was also voted as the nation’s best player in 2009.

Armenian Premier League 2011 winner FC Ulisses began next year’s Cup tournament with a win against the season’s bottom side Ararat as the competition kicked off at the weekend.

The reigning champions came from a goal down to win 3-1 in the first-leg quarterfinal played at home on Saturday.

Soccer authorities in Armenia have decided to allow no foreign goalkeepers in the domestic league beginning next season.

At present, some Armenian Premier League sides, including reigning champions Ulisses, do use the services of foreigners also when it comes to the goalkeeper position.
