Weekend Update: Speaker Abrahamyan visits Hovannisian; rock concerts and civil forum in Liberty Square

The official runner-up in the February presidential elections Raffi Hovannisian, who is disputing the results of election, continues his hunger strike in Liberty Square.

At a rally on Friday Hovannisian announced that his opposition movement will participate in the upcoming May 5 Council of Elders elections, noting that they adopted a principle that "the Armenian people will participate in all elections and will achieve victory in the countryside and in the cities."

"The Mayor will be not me, but the one of us", said the leader of Heritage party, adding that the list of candidates and other details related to the election will be announced at the next rally, which will be held March 22.

Late on Friday evening Hovannisian was visited by the Speaker of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan, who said that in the current confrontation the authorities are willing to compromise, but the compromise must be "reasonable”.

"We have not come to any common denominator, but I think that most likely we will meet again to discuss these issues", said Abrahamyan to Radio Liberty, adding he highly assessed Hovannisian’s approach, “which does not lead the nation to bloodshed; instead he is trying to solve the problem through negotiations”. The Speaker also noted he does not consider Hovannisian’s demand for a second round of elections or the restructuring of parliament to be reasonable.

Meanwhile, until the next rally the opposition is planning to hold a number of activities at Freedom Square. Hovannisian said a rock concert will be performed each Saturday. (Last Saturday the concerts of the rock bands "Vostan Hayots", "Daydream" and "Vordan Karmir" took place; next Saturday the “Empyray” band will perform). From Sunday to Thursday an open civil forum will be operating on the square, (from 5 p.m to 6.30 p.m) which will be considering the proposals on the formation of the executive and the judiciary power which Hovannisian claims will assume rule when “power is restored to the people”.
