YEAR OF ARMENIA IN FRANCE: The Year of Armenia in France will kick off autumn 2006, within the frameworks of which numerous events will take place in 30 French cities, France's ambassador to Armenia Henry Cuny told reporters on January 24, adding also that the official opening of the Year of Armenia in France will be preceded by the Month of France in Armenia.

The highlight of the French Month in Armenia will be a concert by singer Charles Aznavour and two exhibitions, one dedicated to Napoleon and the other to Armenians of Musa Dagh, a village in western Turkey, who fought back Turkish troops and were saved by the crew of a French military ship.

"I wish that the Year of Armenia in France helps my country fellows to reveal Armenia, its rich culture and its spirit, its beautiful nature and its people's hospitability," he said.

NATIONAL GALLERY IS 85: Armenia's National Picture Gallery will mark its 85th anniversary this year by an extensive set of events. Paravon Mirzoyan, the chief director of the Gallery, said a special exhibition will be organized to display all paintings which have been restored in the last two years.

He said another exhibition, slated for autumn will feature French art. He said also special halls will open in the Gallery to display Chinese and Japanese decorative arts.

The Gallery will also publish an illustrated book about most precious works it has. Mirzoyan said last year the Gallery had 65,000 visitors.

YEAR OF ARMENIA IN RUSSIA: On January 22 the opening ceremony of the Year of Armenia in Russia took place in the Kremlin Hall. Within the frameworks of the Armenian Year in Russia exhibition of "Treasures of St. Etchmiadzin" kicked off in State Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Armenian ambassador to Russia Armen Smbatyan said that taking into consideration the role Etchmiadzin has played in the lives of the Armenians it was decided to start the Year in Russia by presenting first of all its cultural relics. The exhibition presents 25 church samples.

Presenting the ties existing between the Hermitage and Armenia, the director of State Hermitage Mikhail Pyatrovski said that during this year the Armenian collections presented in Hermitage will be restored, their showing rooms will be renovated and "Armenian Day" will be organized. Besides, in 2007 an international conference dedicated to Armenia will be organized in the museum.
