Armenia’s weightlifting team was given a hero’s welcome back at home early on Monday after returning victorious from the European championships in Fjord, Norway, having won a total of 18 medals. Gagik Tsarukyan, the head of Armenia’s National Olympic Committee, came to Zvartnots Airport to personally greet the champions and medal winners.
Like many businesses across Armenia these days, a café in the northern town of Stepanavan greets its visitors with a Karabakh flag on its façade in solidarity with the second Armenian republic that came under attack from Azerbaijan earlier this month.
Scores of angry Armenians held a demo in front of Russia’s embassy in Yerevan Wednesday night protesting against the supply of deadly Russian weapons to Azerbaijan. Nearly eight dozen Armenian soldiers were killed in Nagorno-Karabakh earlier this month in fierce battles with attacking Azeri forces armed with state-of-the-art offensive weapons purchased from Russia.
