Levon Mnatsakanyan, the Nagorno Karabakh Republic Defense Minister and Chief Commander of the Defense Army, said that the statements by former defense chief, Lieutenant-General Samvel Babayan are sabotage against the society in Karabakh and its independence.

Babayan, who returned from de-facto exile in Russia last month in the wake of Karabakh’s brief war with Azerbaijan, harshly criticized the authorities in Armenia and Karabakh for the mistakes before and during the April 2-5 hostilities, but he told media that he was not going to engage in active politics yet.

In an interview to Civilnet, Babayan in particular said the April events were neither a blitzkrieg nor a war.

“It was a sabotage, during which the enemy took steps to carry out punitive actions and received a great success, after which they tried to consolidate the success,” he said.

In an interview, Mnatsakanyan said that people do not understand what subversive activities are, and do not analyze thoroughly the goals pursued by the actions of subversive groups.

“If he came to see his relatives and friends, I would accept that as something quite natural. But what he means by saying that is not clear. I consider [his statements] dangerous, and not appropriate for a person who used to hold such a post. It would be acceptable for me if he took steps of consensus. I consider his actions to be sabotage against our society, sovereignty, defense,” Mnatsakanyan said in an interview with Artsakh Public TV.
