Armenian gymnast Harutyun Merdinyan has won the continent’s title and his two team mates got silver medals at European Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Bern, Switzerland.
Merdinyan, who is a 2015 world pommel horse bronze medalist, was declared a European champion after scoring 15,366 points, according to the National Olympic Committee of Armenia (NOCA).
The same source said Armenia’s Vahagn Davtyan and Artur Davtyan won silver medals on still rings and the vault, respectively. Artur Avetisyan, meanwhile, became a silver medalist on the vault in the juniors’ competition.
In an interview with the NOCA website, new European champion Merdinyan said: “I am glad also because this result comes ahead of the Olympic Games. Still, there are elements that I need to work on.”
Assessing his chances at the Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to be held in August, the Armenian athlete added: “Pommel horse requires iron nerves. Everything will be clear there.”
