Armenia beat Guatemala 7-1 in a weekend friendly played in Los Angeles, USA, as part of Varuzhan Sukiasyan’s team’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament commencing in September.
Armenia conceded first early on in the game, but managed to equalize towards the end of the first half due to Borussia Dortmund’s attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Edgar Manucharyan gave Armenia a lead in halftime stoppage time.
In the second period Mkhitaryan scored two more times, registering a hat-trick in the game. Goals for Armenia were also scored by Gegham Kadimyan, Artur Sarkisov and Zaven Badoyan.
The victory was the first for Armenia in their last 15 games. It was registered against a national team that is ranked 89th in the current FIFA list of 200 or so soccer nations (as opposed to Armenia’s 110th rank).
For the first time Armenia scored more than four goals in an official match. And Mkhitaryan’s hat-trick was the first Armenian national team hat-trick ever.
In their next friendly in Los Angeles on June 1 Armenia will play against another central American team, El Salvador, which is the 98th team on the current FIFA rankings.
