Sport: Busy times for Armenian chess masters

Armenian chess players took four individual medals in the European Team Championship which recently ended in Novi Sad, Serbia. Gabriel Sargsyan (3rd board) was awarded golden, Tigran L. Petrosyan (5th board) silver, Lilit Mkrtchyan (2nd board) silver, Lilit Galoyan (3rd board) bronze medals, reports armchess.am.

Armenia’s men’s team in Serbia finished fourth among 38 teams and women’s team finished fifth among 28 participants.

Meanwhile, GM Hrant Melkumyan scored 7 points out of 9 and shared the 1st-5th places with GMs Volkov (Russia), Zhou Weiqi (China), Rychagov (Russia), Deviatkin (Russia) in Chigorin Memorial which was held in St Petersburg (Russia). IM Robert Hovhannisyan scored 6.5 points and GM Zaven Andriasyan, IM Levon Babujyan, Vardges Tovmasyan scored 6 points each. The tournament in Russia had brought together a total of 159 chess players.

And Armenia’s number one male chess master Levon Aronyan is taking part in the Tal Memorial in Moscow, Russia (November 5 to 18). His opponents are Anand, Kramnik, Carlsen, Leko, Gelfand, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, Svidler, Ponomariov. The main event will be followed by the World Blitz Championship (November 16-18).

Also, FIDE has published the results of the pairings of the 1st round of the World Cup which is scheduled to start on November 20. Gabriel Sargsyan’s opponent will be Li Chao B (China), Tigran L. Petrosyan’s - Georg Meier (Germany). Sergei Movsesian will play with Yu Yangyi (China).
