Wrestling: Armenia’s Roman Amoyan wrestles down neighbors to win European title

Roman Amoyan from Armenia has won a gold medal at the European Greco-Roman wrestling championships in Dortmund, Germany, putting up an impressive performance at the continental forum.

Amoyan’s route to the title in the 55-kg division lay through a semifinal bout against Azerbaijan’s Eldaniz Azizli in which the 27-year-old Armenian registered a convincing victory.

In the final later on Saturday Amoyan wrestled another ethnic Azeri athlete, Vugar Rahimov, representing Ukraine, and beat him on points 10-0.

This was the second European title in Amoyan’s career.

Armenia’s other weekend successes at the Greco-Roman wrestling event included а silver medal by Artur Alexanyan (96 kg), bronze medals by Artur Shahinyan (84 kg) and Yuri Patrikeyev (120 kg).
