Martial Arts Success: Armenian sambo fighter becomes world champion

Stepanakert native Ashot Danielyan beat all his opponents in the 82-kg section at the World Sambo Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia, to win a gold medal for Armenia.

As the Sambo Federation of Armenia reports, earlier bronze medals at the championships were won by Armenian fighters Yerjanik Karapetyan (48 kg), Sose Balasanyan (52 kg), Tigran Kirakosyan (52 kg) and Mavrik Nasibyan (74 kg).

Sambo is a Russian acronym for unarmed self-defense and is a hand-to-hand fighting system developed in the Soviet armed forces. It later grew into a sport that is currently mostly popular in former Soviet and Eastern bloc countries.
