Chess: Armenia set to place among top three at World Team Championship

Due to a strong finish at the World Team Championship, Armenia is likely to win a bronze when they play Egypt in the ninth and final round of the competition later on Tuesday.

The quartet of Armenian players led by grandmaster Levon Aronian beat title-holders Russia and then India in Rounds 7 and 8 of the Championship being held in Tsaghkadzor. With 9 points after eight games Armenia is in third place and has good chances to retain it in the last round.

Before the final matches China leads the 10-nation standings with 13 points, followed by Ukraine that has 11 points. Russia is behind Armenia with 8 points.

Armenian will need a victory against Egypt to win the bronze medal. A draw will also be enough for Aronian and company if Russia fails to beat Israel.
