The European Union’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said on Saturday she was deeply worried by reports of heavy fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh and called for an end to hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Her appeal followed a statement by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs expressing “grave concern” over resumed clashes in the conflict zone.

“I call on the parties to stop the fighting immediately and observe the ceasefire. The sides must show restraint and avoid any further actions or statements that could result in the escalation,” Mogherini, who visited Baku and Yerevan on February 29-March 1, said in a statement.

Earlier today Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of a sharp escalation of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh said Azerbaijan’s offensive against its positions was “unprecedented” since the 1994 ceasefire.
